Renato Chisso today officially declared that the A4 highway's gonna get the third line between Mestre and Gorizia by 2014.
110km --> 1.000.000.000€

It will help to alleviate the heavy traffic condition (41.000.000 vehicles/year, 30% of which are trucks) we experience today on that part of the highway.

Hope they'll be precise on that deadline.

112.000 vehicles a day on the entire route from Mestre to Gorizia? That's quite a lot for an intercity connection.

That's what they say on "my" source. Here.

I think they mean only the peak location. Toll roads are usually not that busy, especially not on long distance intercity connections. To compare; the French A7 has 70.000 vehicles a day between Lyon and Orange on the toll road section and counts as one of the busiest toll routes in Europe.

Probably you're right. 112.000/day are really a number of vehicles and I don't know in which way that segment of the highway could absorb it.

No, it can't possibly be that high. I'm surprised they'll widen it all the way to the Slovenian border, I think it would be enough to Palmanova (A23). But I don't know why this route is so preferred, I guess to avoid Trieste. But it's worse for the environment, there's annoying bora wind often, and from a 6-lane motorway in Italy you'll come to a 4-lane expressway without hard shoulders in Slovenia. They'll also make a reserve for eight lanes. Imagine an 8-lane highway by Gorizia!

Doesn't sound right: first, by 2012 Villese-Gorzia should get emergeny lane and two years later already third lane? As Verso said, third lane will probably be built till Palmanova interchange and that should be more than enough.

But then again, 110 km from Mestre you're already by Gorizia; from Mestre to Palmanova is only 80 km. Maybe they're gonna immediately widen the Villesse-Gorizia road and make it motorway at the same time?

What exactly does this mean? Can someone please translate it?

Nel 2012 l'ampliamento raggiungerà il tratto compreso fra Villesse e Gorizia, mentre nel 2013 quello tra il Passante di Mestre (di prossima apertura) e San Donà di Piave.

Translation: in 2012 the section between Villesse e Gorizia will be upgraded, while the upgrade of the section between Passante di Mestre (which will open soon) and San Dona di Piave will be over in 2013.

In the same article (the link is somewhere here) they say the upgrade of the entire A4 from Mestre to Gorizia will be finished in 2014.

Why? Between Palmanova and Venezia is motorway very congested and you usually drive 50% 80-100km/h on overtaking lane because of overtaking trucks and buses and 50% 120-140km/h because os so many cars! And between Palmanova and Vilesse you also often have to brake because of trucks on overtaking lane!

I would say that it has 60000-80000 vehicles per day...

Maybe around Portogruaro there is really about 50-60.000 vehicles per day (and even more toward Mestre), but eastern traffic is lower. From Palmanova to east on A4 traffic is (my observations) even lower. Usually until first toll station in Mestre there are no queues even in morning rush hour. Problem is with A4-A27 interchange, where almost all traffic from both motorways merges towards Mestre.

Would be interesting to see some traffic counts for Italian motorway network.

Yes but now with the Passante there won't be any tolls for those who are not going to Mestre, so I suppose there will be less congestion on the A27/Passante and Passante/A4 interchanges.
