What is the point of this motorway? Alternative for A4?

I suppose it's both an alternative for A4 as well as an upgrade to serve local and regional traffic. The countryside between Milano and Bergamo is densely populated, with towns and large villages usually only 2 to 4 kilometers apart. It would be a difficult task to accurately provide population figures of this area, because the provinces also cover main cities not served by the new A35.

According to OSM, the 2nd carriageway b/n Segrate and Vignate should also be in service now:

SP14 Milan: Segrate – Vignate 21 6.7km (2010 to 2014) – projectmap
SP14 Milan: Vignate – Liscate (A58) 12 5.2km (2010 to 2014) – projectmap

What's your source for 5.2km? Maybe the entire 11.9km section is already motorway-like, isn't it?

The area between Milano and Brescia is heavily populated. Many towns grew into commuter suburbs-of-sorts of Milano, and there is also plenty of industry-related truck traffic.

A4 is very busy, though not catastrophically jammed as it was before they added a new lane till Bergamo.

However, the local roads on the rough alignment this new highway follow are bad, and they clog traffic on the villages and town they traverse. A4 is too far away to be used by this traffic.

They are also building a new highway on the northern outskirts of the metro area.

These two new highways, together with the new outer ring road (eastern sector), will greatly improve mobility in the region.

Is there any update on the A4 widening west of Milan? It was supposed to be widened to eight lanes between Marcallo and Tangenziale Ovest between July 2013 and late 2014.

The meeting with the media at 11:30 am at the center of Anas Maintenance / Compartment Traffic police at the exit of the motorway of Lamezia Terme.
This is what one of the sections looked like for over a decade, Google Earth imagery dating back to 2003 shows this layout of two lanes.

They are working on the stretch. I passed there a couple of evenings ago. From what I was able to see they might be able to finish by the end of the year.

A3 Salerno-Reggio Calabria, Anas: opened to traffic two new sections in Calabria

If I check Google Earth, at least two streches still being upgraded are left:
between Contrada Grada and between Milordo and Montegaldo.

Most of the road was already built in the early '70s.

I found a nice article about this road and mostly about its corruption:

http://www.thedailybeast.com/article...1-million.html

In a month, I will go to southern Italy.
Maybe I will watch this road myself...

From what I can make out at least 100km of the A3 is either under construction or not yet started. It is one massive project, seeing as the Mafia ran off with the money in the 1970s leaving a 2 lane dog track pretending to be a motorway in many parts.

Around 300km to 350km of the A3 is now a complete modern motorway, on the other hand.

That article is so full of mistakes that I would be embarassed to use it as a source. It would be funny if it wasn't that Mafia killed thousands of innocent men and women in Italy: don't be driven by stereotypes and amateurism should be a form of basic respect towards those who died.

That article is one blunder after the other. It is really not worth pointing all factual problems with it. In any case, the major reason for the reconstruction of A3 was not that it was "falling apart" at all, but that it had become functionally obsolete for modern demands. This is a direct result of a bad design decision taken in the early 1960s to build it as a substandard autostrada to save money. So yes, it had plenty of sections without shoulders and some tight curves, but in no way was it breaking apart.

I did. I will repeat what I said again.

Around 300-350km of the A3 is completed modern motorway. some 100-150km is not completed modern motorway but some of that 100-150km is under construction.

Pretty well the whole road from Naples to Reggio di Calabria, as it was in 1980, had to be reconstructed even if only to add missing hard shoulders to 2+2 sections.

Some sections of the Autostrada were even 1+1 with no hard shoulders and with dreadful alignments.

The last updates on ANAS website shows that it was almost complete (97%), but we are still wainting news.
