It depends on what you mean by "Turin". If you depart from the south side of the city, the difference is only 6 km or so.

28km is less than 10% difference.

This is definitively slower until it will be properly connected at both ends.

Happy 50° birthday Autostrada del Sole
4 October 1964-2014

Great opening:

The first sections between Milan and Parma were opened already in 1958.

Not since 1959?
I ask that because in 1959 the second edition of the Italian highway code was realased. The first one dates back to 1920, the third (and current) one to 1993.

The font on the highway code of 1959 is not very specified but there is one that is not transport but one more tight. From the 60ies the government ceded to the ministery of public work (now of the transport) to designs new signs without the use of a new law for eich new sign. So in 1961 were introduced the first motorways sign (the greens) and, with that new signs, the transport font...

So motorways had blue signs until 1961?
Do you also know when the motorway symbol and A-numbers were introduced?

Yes, it has. (1969, sorry for my error!)

I'm not very sure, but I think also in 1969. Because in the Highway Code of 1959 there isn't the sign of motorway-number! (I've check this)...

The Ministerial Circular no. 9540 of 20 December 1969 introduced the new motorway signs. (I've asked the text and images to Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport)
