Well, if this one has been dubbed the 'outside' bypass (tangenziale esterna), why would you construct it to connect to the 'regular' bypass the A50? The A58 always had the purpose of being further outside than a mere continuation of the A50 through the suburbs.

Still, your hope of a fuller beltway is not completely lost. As far as I know, there are still plans for a Tangenziale Esterna Ovest, i.e. an outside bypass West of Milan. Preliminary maps that I saw showed it as a direct continuation of the A58. Still, I am not sure whether such a continuous road would serve Milan better than a turn-off from the A1 elsewhere. There are probably historical reasons why Milan has no beltway in the first place, but its three (now four) standalone Tangenziale ...

What about extending A58 north to Pedemontana? The land north of there isn't completely developed yet, getting a corridor shouldn't be too hard.

Thanks. I think about traffic going from Milano-South to Milano-North, e.g. Rozzano to Monza (or Genova (A7) - Bergamo). It would never use A58 but A1 also if A1 would be congested. There's a gap less than 10km b/n A50 and A58 near Lanzano.....

Not fully developed, but space for a full corridor appears to be sparse.

It would rather use the A51 Tangenziale Est, which connects nicely at the Southern end of the A50. Or, if there is an incident on that route, the A50 and A4/Pedemontana/what other connection is there at the Northern side of town.

The following is kind of speculative (someone who lived longer in Milan than six months may be able to clarify), but I suspect that part of the reason that Milan has no classical beltway is that the metropolitan region has an excentric centre of gravity. North of the city, there is an urban sprawl that more or less runs from Magenta and Gallerate to Bergamo. South of the city centre, you've got a few areas of Milan proper and then you find yourself in agricultural areas pretty quickly. It follows that regional traffic from South of Milan to the Northern side is relatively sparse. That is of course not to say that there is no traffic from places like Assago and the A7 to the areas North and East of Milan. But I expect that its numbers are not substantial enough to warrant anything like a continuation of the A50 to the A4-East, as opposed to the separate A58 that was now built.

That was the original project, but it was scrapped before construction began.

Renzi says A3 road done in 2016

A controversial stretch of southern Italian highway under construction for roughly 25 years, to the tune of some nine billion euros amid delays and mafia infiltration, will be completed next year, says Premier Matteo Renzi.

The 440-kilometre stretch of the A3 highway, first targeted for modernization in 1990 by the European Union, will be finalized in 2016, Renzi pledged in an interview on RAI television on Sunday.

About 100 kilometres are still under construction on the project but Renzi said that a new board at highway manager ANAS will "accelerate (construction) and by next year, we will conclude the work," Renzi said. "The telenovella of the Salerno-Reggio Calabria is about to end," said the premier.

Hello everyone,

I will be traveling from Monaco to Milan this summer.

I have 2 free days in between, anyone have suggestions for a scenic route and cool place to go?

I was considering Florence

It depends on what you consider scenic and cool.

I would go to the mountains, or to lake Como, rather than Florence which is a bit far...

Not considering traffic, I found Florence to be 5 hours away from Monaco, which seems ok.

Not sure how to describe scenic or cool... I guess something just worth looking at..like the opposite of I-80 in Kansas

Will look into Lake Como

Lake Como does look great but it seems like a place for couples rather than a single guy..

Not exactly sure what I am looking for !

Florence is much more a place for couples than lake Como, in my opinion.
Maybe driving into the mountains? Mont Cenis pass rather than driving through the coast

You cannot drive there... Not through anyway.

Italy Is scenographic nearly anywhere, I would just go and drive.

Driving along lake Iseo is very nice. The Alps are great: what about Stelvio pass?

I don't know what a single landscape looks like, to me tgere are only nice or not

Go to Merano, take Stelvio to Bormio, then down to Iseo passing on the incredibly cool western shore, down to Brescia and Milan
