Going from Milano towards Frejus is especially strange: you need to stop at five (5) toll booths in just about 3/4 h

Do they have an open toll system as opposed to the closed toll system they mostly have in France? (no ticket, but fixed amounts)

Ah, also on the Milano - Chiasso (CH) you have those toll barriers with fixed amounts (1 €, 1,5 €?). I think this is a waste of time.

Also because then the tangenziali in Milano is, I believe, free, so you have to stop again for a ticket when you take the Autostrada to Bologna of Genoa for example.

It would have been easier if there was just 1 barrier to take a ticket between just after Milano, instead of all those stops (on an already crowded motorwaysystem!!!).

If you go from Venezia to Como/Switzerland, you have to pay three times in a very short time (just before Milano, just after Milano and shortly before Como). Once it irritated me, so I used the SS35 expressway.

I still don't get it. Did they remove the frontal toll station Venezia-est?

Ok, from the last two pics from the previous page I assume they made a temporary bypass around the toll station (old pavement actually), and the toll station doesn't work any more, but where do you now pay, if you go from Trieste to (the center of) Venice?

There is a new station just after Venezia Est interchange. Old (actually not that old) station will be removed. If I'm not wrong, new toll station goes actually on the place of old one, demolished around 1995.

from Italian wikipedia, where you can see old and new toll stations:

red - tolled
blue (new bypass) - tolled
green - untolled

I wrote myself Milan metropolitan area is an exception in the italian system, that doesn't mean that you can travel as I wrote from Taranto to Trieste (1038 km) on toll highways without stopping to pay your toll...do you know any other european country where you can do that? it's not provocative...my curiosity, I really don't know

Actually I checked and I think the route Taranto-Brenner pass is 1100 km of uninterrupted toll highway...maybe that's the longest point to point route you can do in Italy (without running in circles of course)

Other 2 more in Milan on A8 and East bypass (at Agrate... the most 'pointless' barrier ever)

Anyway normally in Italy you pay once you exit the highway for the total amount of kms you ran

Ultimate mayhem at A4 toll station entering Mestre. Did it used to be so jammed all the time upon completing the new bypass?

2 summers ago I spent 2 hours and 20 km of line at the Mestre barrier...

I'm very happy it's gone for good

Yeah, a friend of mine told me another problem was an important exit right after this toll barrier. If you weren't on the right lane, you couldn't exit.

Oh I remember A23... I still have a movie on my video camera from 2001 I just can't be bothered to invest in equipment in order to convert this movie from '8' camera casette to digital form on the computer But it wasn't jammed too much 150 km/h was quite comfortable there

Why pointless? They could save money by putting just one toll station on A4 before the interchange with A51, but then traffic jams by such toll station would be huge. Or you had sth else in mind?

"passante" reminds me the hungarian word "passzentos" which means "fits quite good"

true, last time I was in Mestre jam, it was one hour, but not because of toll stations, but simply because of too much traffic between both of them.

@Chris, exits on tangenziale are one after another in rapid succesion, so you hardly miss anything important. It is more important to be on the correct side of the toll station on A4 Torino-Milano. If you're not careful, you'll take the wrong motorway.

Now that the traffic is lower, the old A4 motorway through Mestre (now A57) got some absurd speed limits:
