I prefer a bridge. A tunnel will do it, though, as long as it is not a "rail shuttle" that carries road vehicles.

It is paramount to provide a fixed link between the island and mainland Italy. The economy of the island is severely affected by poor transportation links (e.g., none) with the continent.

None? Then what do you call ferries?

I should have clarified I was talking of fixed links.

A bridge has collapsed on A14 near Ancona.

Two people died in a small car that was crushed by the overpass. Two more are injured.

That section was enlarged to 3 lanes per direction in 2011, so the overpass was less that 10 years old.

It was a single-span structure, no support column in the median.

Sorry Chris, that is not it. It was #167, not #165:

The geometry is the same, though.

thanks.

2008 Street View suggests it may not have been replaced during the widening works? Or perhaps they only replaced the central span?

There is close to the regions affected with earthquakes last time. It may be reason of that disaster.

It could be, I'm not sure. In 2008 works were underway, maybe the overpass was already replaced (it's one of the first things they complete), but in that picture it doesn't seem so new.

It's not so close. Earthquake was barely felt there.

The steel beams look newer than the concrete on top of it...

It is the same bridge as on Google SV - clearly not renovated, maybe just painted:

Also it appears that side supports are guilty, not steel girders (that would be difficult as they appear very strong).

So it is either a spell of bad luck or, worryingly, something wrong with structure monitoring by the road authority.

I don't remember any case like that in Poland or in the UK, at least in the last decade or two.

So they were doing repair works... that might be an important clue.
