To enter could be enough as you only have to get the ticket, but the same number gettin' out the toll highway is not a good idea, as to pay normally you spend more time that just pickin' a ticket

About toll highways

I'm just courious to see how the authomatic system with no barrier will work on new Autostrada Pedemontana will work
They will start the construction of this motorway (crossing Northern Milan area from Bergamo to Malpensa) next spring, then we have to wait a bit

No

Obviously the system has to be defined, but in general it will work like that: a number of cameras will read your plate and in case you didn't pay (the payement systems are to define: possibly you can pay by web or in other ways) you'll receive a sanction at home

In this way Milan's Ecopass (tolled area in Milan city center: a sort of pollution charge) works
In Milan if you enter this area a camera register your plate and verify if you paied. You can pay by phone o by internet: you can enter the Ecopass zone within 24 h after you paied, or you can pay within 24 h after you enter the zone (obviously there are even season tickets)
If you don't pay after 24 h you entered you had to pay a fine

The toll system for Pedemontana highway will be similar

To notice that Milano-Bologna (195 km) complete upgrade to 4 lanes is under way (Modena-Bologna stretch has 4 lanes since many years) and only Lodi-Piacenza branch is currently 'out' of the plan... probably the bridge on the river Po makes this stretch widening the most 'difficult' (or the most expensive)

This thread slided down in the 3rd page...

UP

Let's talk again of SS36

I said previously in this thread that this Superstrada in Lecco (50 km from Milan) goes deep underground in a tunnel

Now there are some pics of Google street view to better show how the infrastructure is

I have been on that road, I think half of the route along Lago di Como is underground, split in dozens of tunnels.

I've been there too, about 3 weeks ago. I was really surprised the tunnel under Lecco is so long.
It's a very scenic highway along the Como Lake, although quality of the road is sometimes quite bad.

It was absolutely necessary! When the route was on surface it was a nightmare to pass Lecco!

I think Chris referred to the existing part from Lecco to Colico, not the Lecco city tunnel
I think, anyway, Lecco Colico deserves a better maintenance and even an update; althoug I think even the stretch of SS36 between Lecco and Giussano has to be upgraded (they're talkin they want to make the third lane since so many years...), over all superstrada entrances and exits

Last two things: they're building a 4 km tunnel to bypass Monza (it is the most congested branch of SS36, as we are pratically in the 'core' of Milan conurbation) to have finally an efficient interchange with A4 and Tangenziale Nord

http://www.statale36.it/

there is even a project to upgrade SS36 from Colico in direction of Sondrio to have a superstrada even in its final branch... but actually this project was not financed yet

Just a question: how much Italian toll do I need to pay if I want to drive from Koper (SLO) to Arnoldstein (AT) using the A4 and A23?
