SS202 Trieste - Monfalcone

The SS202 is one of the connections between Slovenia and the Italian motorway network. This new road connects the Slovene H5 with the Italian A4.

1.

2. The SS202 is quite a curvy road, though there are quite some straight sections as well.

3. We're going uphill.

4. At least the weather is good

5. Another curve.

6.

7. Still going uphill.

8. Trieste is still close, on our left side. We're much higher than the city now though.

9.

10. Tunnel. The new tunnels of the Trieste bypass are probably the best tunnel that I've seen during my holiday (worst tunnel: Tauerntunnel )

11. We're heading southeast now, apparantly. As I said, the road has quite a lot of curves.

12. Another tunnel. Sorry about the contralight and the dirty windshield

That's part 1, part 2 is under way.

Claustrophobic road... narrow, barriers close to the lanes... all in all typical Italian

I never feel quite at ease at narrow roads. If there's not much traffic it isn't a problem, but driving on a curvy, narrow and busy road... nah thanks.

Man, why are those road numbers so small? Hardly legible unless you're very close.

uf, it's easy to say when you got used to NL roads. but when the road must climb up to 350 m (or even more if we're not talking about Trieste) in only few km, then you must think different

Nice pics, but a few corrections.

- SS202 goes only until the new 3-km Carso Tunnel (and continues as an ordinary road), the rest is RA13 (or R37, as Autostrade S.p.A. calls it)
- RA13 isn't a motorway-like road, but a real motorway (autostrada), it just isn't tolled
- A4 doesn't end by Monfalcone, but by Sistiana; only tolling ends by Monfalcone. A4 runs from Torino to Trieste, and Sistiana is the official exit for the center of Trieste, so that's where the A4 ends.

Will your mistakes ever stop, Timon? Joke, cool pics, waiting for the A23!

Yeah I know, but I don't have this feeling in say France or Switzerland... But most Italian motorways are quite extraordinary considering the terrain they run through.

I hope the Italians will refurbish their expressways the way like the Spaniards do A1 and A3 are a good start, but there's a lot to do, and expressways seems to be neglected somewhat.

our expressway are extremely well kept, the SS (superstrade) are ofte badly maitaied

Spanish highway are new, remember that. Italian highways are amog the oldest in europe...the new ones are impeccable...look at the one I posted last page in Sicily of all places!

Since they don't sign anything at the motorway itself it's hard to say where the A4 exactly starts. I had to used Google Maps to check this out, and as it turns out, Google Maps was also wrong. I guess that you have to have driven this road for a few times before you really know how the situation is.

In that case it must be at exit Duino, because there's still a small SS202 sign after exit Sistina: Google Maps. So the A4 starts somewhere between exit Duino and Sistina
