There are a few interchanges on that road, so you don't necessarily have to go on A4, but now you reminded me that I saw the sign on the last entrance before the A4 motorway, so maybe it was because of that. Although, I'd expect non-motor vehicles to be banned from such a road.

Motorcycle yes, it's a motor vehicle, but not small scooters; how fast can they go anyway?

Without blockage a scooter normally goes around 70-80 km/h... With some illegal performance equipment it can go faster (100+ km/h), but this is ILLEGAL!

Moreover a 50cc can be driven since ypu're 14 years old and 125 cc can be driven since you're 16!
From 150cc or more you must be at least 18 years old!

So I think it's true to deny the access to motorways to 50cc and 125cc!
If I was a parent I wouldn't be happy to have my 14 years old son driving on a motorway!
And above all with a small vehicle going not faster than 80 km and among cars that go 110-130 km/h!

Yeah, I sometimes drive on a 100 km/h road. (usually 90 because of the slowpokes) and then a scooter overtakes me on the parallel cycling path.

Well, technically a Yamaha T-Max is still a scooter, it sports a 600cc engine and it can do 180+ Km/h...but beware of Tutor and other tricks.

Iìts easy to spot 50's , they do not have EU blue tags on their license plates. But it might be tricky to tell a 125 from a 200 since on many occasions you have one body for more engines.

You're right... it's harder to recognize 125cc! You have to look at the details!
Above all you can look at the dimension of the exhaust and hear the noise of the engine!
If it sounds like a mosquito probably it's a 125cc!

180 km/h by scooter? You'd own the autostrada!

It has a real sportbike frame. I wouldn't try a fast curve on automatic transmission though...

Megascooters were hot in Italian big cities in the early 2000s...now harcdore winter riders use real bikes, mainly naked ones, to commute to work. Softcores moved to Smart. Sissies.

My Vespa PX disagrees with you. According to her in winter there's no problem at all

A statistics thread has been opened a few times now, but they're all a few pages back I think. Anyway, this thread is about Italy, not about statistics.

I've promised pictures from Sicily autostradas, now here they are. First ...

A20 Messina - Palermo
(actually it ends around 45 km before Palermo at interchange with A19 from Catania at Buonfornello).
Photos taken in July 2009

This 182 km long coastal autostrada was constructed from 1969 until 2004. Despite referenced as coastal it's actually mountanious motorway, which runs through numerous tunnels and viaducts, many tunnels are at least 2 km long and run in series and viaducts are often very high above deep valleys.
A20 actually begins south of Messina and includes the whole Messina bypass (free of charge) and then continues toward Palermo. A20 is tolled (about 10 € for the whole length), bud pretty badly maintained (as all Sicilian roads). Nevertheless it offers many magnificent views, in the middle green lane there are often very nice pine, palm and oleander decorations - of course if you're not underground (quite a good deal of journey).
Toll stations are simply too ugly to take pictures (there are some in this thread - concrete square boxes)

1 - After Messina there is the oldest part:

2 - Very quickly you get used to bland road markings and overgrown road sides:

3 - Quality is a bit better than on non-paying motorways in Sicily (but far worse than usual autostradas):

4 - Actually it is the best autostrada in Sicily (not counting new one around Syracuse)

5 - nice decorations of palm trees are common

6 - west of Tindari

7 - east of Tindari

8 - often A20 goes in two levels

9 - inside dimly lit tunnels (common)

10 - quality of pavement

11 -

12 - viaducts and tunnels get boring sometimes

13 - galleries are also pretty common

14 - higher the fence, deeper the valley below

15 -

A20 - part 2:

16 - another nice decoration of palms and oleanders

17 - eucalyptus trees are very common sight

18 -

19 - one of the longer viaducts

20 - sometimes they change broken lights too

21 - this is the youngest part of A20 - still below normal european quality standards

22 - it is more or less on viaduct or in tunnel

23 - newest part has no plant decoration

24 - but it has still nice views

25 - interesting tunnel entrance

26 - back to old part

27 - Cefalu' exit signage in three following pictures:

28 -

29 -

30 - continuing towards Palermo maintenance gets better:

31 - approaching frontal toll station:

32 - nicely decorated end of A20, interchange with A19 in distance:

Nice report!

The vegetation is fascinating, it seems like a jungle sometimes!
