The concept of opening emergency lanes are sadly enough spreading out. You see it often in The Netherlands, Germany and England are experimenting with it too.

Too bad for traffic safety. If you have a crash, you just have to hope emergency vehicles can reach you in time... Opening the emergency lane for traffic costs lives!
A regular widening is better, or even in this case, an entire new bypass.

To be honest emergency lanes don't 'disappear': they become 'dinamyc lanes'
They install panel like that one



which show you the lanes opened to traffic and which are not
If there are no problems all the lanes are opened (indicated with those green arrows), but in case of accident they close the right lane which becomes an emergency lane

Yeah, but what if it's one hell of a stillstanding traffic jam? The emergency lane is already blocked then..

Well, such lanes (rushhourlanes, that's how we call them) aren't the right long-term solution. We already have rushhourlanes which opened 2 years ago, and have to be opened now from 6 am to 8 pm. That's almost a permanent lane, but no safety.

When's the whole passante gonna be finished? Right now the first section they're gonna open ain't gonna help much, unless you're travelling from Belluno to Trieste or vice versa..

I once drove the SS36 from Chiavenna to Lecco, the amount of tunnels is incredible at the Lago di Como shoreline. I think actually more length is in tunnels than in daylight. But the road was very outdated and crappy pavement, but it looks like a narrow motorway.

From Colico to Lecco the freeway got 2 lanes and a large amount of tunnels and viaducts: I think they build it in '70s; this branch need a 'modernization'

In '90s they built the Lecco bypass which overcrosses the city completely underground: a tunnel of 4.8 km under the center of the city, with 3 or 4 exits; then it comes out overground, overcomes with a bridge Adda river and enters a very long tunnel again to complete the bypass of Lecco western suburbs... it's a very cool infrastructure (and very usefull: before they opened the bypass you had to cross the city; during the w.e. that could take up to 1 or 2 hours...)
Unfortunately I couldn't find many pictures of it on the web

From Lecco to Giussano the freeway got to lanes and it is outdated; over all exits are crappy; there is a project to update the stretch to 3 lanes and with less 'dangerous' exits... but they didn't start the works yet

From Giussano to Monza the stretch is of early '90s: 3 lanes and with road illumination in the whole run

There is a project to extend the freeway from Colico to Sondrio in the Northern part and, in the Southern one, from Monza (a Milan suburb) deeper in the city of Milan by an underground tunnel

SS36 is a free motorway with max speed 110 km/h

I noticed now the project forecasts a new halftrack for A7 highway in substitution of the old and crappy A7 Southbound (see the first pages of this thread)

I noticed that two in what you posted! Great news! Thata really is a very importat work, in my opinion, to turn the A-7 north of Genoa into a real motorway.

But from the last picture it seems that the new carriageway will just go till some km's north of Genova, not all teh way until Arquata Scrivia as it should.

Last year they completed the “superstrada” (no emergency lane) from Teramo to A14 which pretty much means that unfortunately it probably will never be a full “autostrada” (but now you have four lanes and you don’t have to drive through the little towns). As for the section between Teramo and Val Vomano (direction Gran Sasso) it should be ready by the end of the year or the start of 2008.
