SS3bis between Cesena and Perugia

Last and definitely least (camera battery was empty, so switched to cellphone)

I dont' remember if I have already posted this link, anywhay, here is it. When the Genova-La Spezia railway was doubled between 1932 and 1970 the old single track line was rebuilt as a single lane road with alternate traffic, today switching every 20 minutes.

Due to fog (at may!) a pile-up occured last friday morning on A4 near Cessalto (Venice), involving about 70 (italian, rumenian, ukrainian, slovenian) vehicles, luckly no fatality.
in the last few years this section of the A4 has become one of the most dangerous of the italian motorway network in case of fog.
some pics from Gazzettino, the local newspaper:

At least new concrete barrier in the middle prevented "spilling" crashed vehicles onto opposite half.
But really, I never liked part of A4 between Palmanova and Mestre. Very long straits, very dense traffic, especially with large number of trucks. Really hope for a widening soon.

Last year I met some fog on A4 between Verona and Padova on otherwise completely clear day. Visibility suddenly dropped to about 30-50 meters and driving with 130 km/h it felt like driving into wall of white void with no indication, what lies in front.

not to mention interchange Palmanova - there is allways crowded. i allways have feeling that 90% of drivers change to left lane for direction Venezia in last 50 metres.

1) Luckily construction is starting for the widening to 3 lanes

2) you drove 130 km/h with 30 meters visibility? the speed limit with that visibility is like 50 km/h!!!! Anyway, whoever lives in north Italy can drive in a wall of white cloud without fear...it's a matter of habit

oh, that's good news! entire section palmanova - mestre?
and what about widening the vilesse - gorizia expressway? that section is so narrow that overtaking a truck is always a challenge.

it will be done in sections from Mestre to Villesse (3 lanes) and the Villesse-Gorizia will be transformed to the "autostrada" standard

The first sections to be built will be the lotto Mestre-S.Donà (lotto 1) and the Villesse-Gorizia. Than lotto 2-3-4

Only until entering white wall then I stepped onto the brake, when I realised that harmless fog from a distance is actually very dense.

there was a discussion on the italian forum...we do not know. We do not know even if it will be actually renamed from RA to A.

We will see, anyway from a practical point of view it will be an Autostrada

if you look on the side of most of the italian autostrade in the north of Italy (an area which is plagued by thick fog during winter) you will see semi-circles painted in white along the right white lane. they are painted every 30 meters or so

There is a sign every some km that says the speed limit you have to keep if you are able to see only 1, 2 or 3 of those white signs while in fog.

actually, i have noticed them dissappearing. i remember a lot of them, for instance at A21, and recently i drove almost entire A21 and i didn't see any of those dots even those signs "in caso di nebbia" for those dots dissapeared. now there are only normal 50 km/h limit signs with written "in caso di nebbia"

driving tips in case of fog (from autostrade website):
the first sign: look out at the half dot on the tarmac;
the 2d and 3d: if you see x half dot then drive at y speed
