btw, this is unquestionably the tallest building on Rocky Point, and it may well be the tallest in the entire Westshore area.
I'm working on figuring that out for sure. |

Is there anything in that area being built that isn't bland looking?

The Ritz won't be bland when/if it's built.

Geeze, what happened to the top floor and roof-top over-hangs / awnings?

There's a decent chance that stuff's just icing that'll be added later, but the windows on the top two floors don't resemble those in the rendering, so they may've tossed em. That'd be a shame. Did those top floors originally have the condo-hotel units? They may've discarded them due to the market, in which case the entire roofline might, indeed, look this way.

It's Rocky Pointe, man. Unless they actually put in sidewalks and made it an urban oasis, you are gonna get some pretty generic stuff. So be it. For filler, I think it is pretty good

UPSCALE BUT DOWNSIZED
By RICHARD MULLINS rmullins@tampatrib.com Published: November 2, 2008 Known for a sleek, upscale style, the Westin hotel chain operates more than 150 locations around the world, typically huge hotels in big destination cities. Now, Westin is about to open a new, more compact prototype hotel on Rocky Point. Possibly open by February, the 16-story location will be the first of dozens more mini-Westins with all the ritzy features of a full-sized Westin: gourmet food, high-end exercise rooms, Starbucks cafes and every high-tech feature available. The goal is to capitalize on Westin's brand cache with business travelers and provide nearly identical places to stay when they venture to smaller markets such as Tampa or Birmingham, Ala., said Dilip Kanji, president of Impact Properties, which is developing the hotel. At one point, the developers of the hotel hoped to sell condos on the top floors, taking advantage of wrap-around water views. But that idea ended with the real estate slump. Now it will be a hotel only. The upscale style will come at a price. Guest rates will vary between $179 and $279 a night. Reporter Richard Mullins can be reached at (813) 259-7919. http://www2.tbo.com/content/2008/nov...ed/news-money/ |

^There's also a big graphic showing the layout of a hotel room on the front page of today's business section, I'll try to get a scan up sometime today.

Way to miss the Super Bowl there guys, they should sue their GC. And when did $200 a night become upscale? That sounds pretty average to me.

$200 a night is pretty upscale in a sea of $85-$150 a night hotels.

Hardin Construction beats clock on Tampa Westin
The Westin Tampa Bay Airport Hotel plans to open Jan. 22 just in time for Super Bowl XLIII and two months ahead of schedule. The 16-story, 255-room hotel with a five-level parking garage wasn’t expected to be complete until March. But Hardin Construction Co., the general contractor, is wrapping up its work early. Impact Properties, owner of the hotel, expects to host a grand opening in April. Located at Rocky Point on the Courtney Campbell Causeway, the new Westin will feature the Aquaknox restaurant, the rooftop bar Blu Vu and a Starbucks. http://tampabay.bizjournals.com/tamp...5/daily52.html |
