Nigerian student, Shaherah Uchenna Obika wins the Miss Caribbean & Commonwealth beauty pageant. She is the first Nigerian to win this title since its inception
FIRST NIGERIAN to win Miss Caribbean & Commonwealth "She wanted to win so badly that it hurt" says Shaherah Uchenna Obika, a 19 year-old student at Southampton Solent University, has won the 18th Miss Caribbean & Commonwealth contest in the theatre of the Polish Centre, Hammersmith, West London. She is the first Nigerian ever to win the title, and the first winner to do so by way of a "tie-break" since the 6th Miss Caribbean & Commonwealth in 1986. Uchenna, who lives at Palmer's Green in North London, was recommended to the contest by J.M. Promotions (presenters of Miss ACS). Hilda Agmebemiese, a 19 year-old Ghanaian student recommended by the Miss Malaika UK promotion, was second, and Patricia Reynolds, a 28 year-old payroll administrator from Colindale, Northwest London, who had qualified for the final on the strength of contest success in her homeland Botswana, was third. For the first time in the history of the contest - which has been dominated hitherto by Trinidadians and Jamaicans - African contestants took all three top places. Outgoing title-holder Shaherah Williams spoke with passion and eloquence about her prize trip to Ghana last autumn. Shaherah agreed with the judges' choice of her successor: "She wanted to win so badly that it hurt" Archbishop Dr Bancroft McCarthy declared open the promotion, which was commered by Esta Lumutenga (outgoing Deputy Miss Caribbean & Commonwealth) and former contestant Brenda Gabriel. The vocal entertainment included the United Christian Harmony Group, Angel J, Zika K, Ice T Cool and VocalZones. The Cips were sponsored by Tropical Connections, and prizes on the evening donated by Evoke luxury leatherware, Jewellery by Anne, Ethical Elegance, Shoe Lagoon and Ben Black Photography. shahera in the midst

DINA FEKADU:ETHIOPIA
What are your interests and what do you enjoy doing the most? Horseback riding and swimming. Name one person other than your parents who has had the most influence on your life. Why? Nelson Mandela. He showed the world that he is a strong man who believed in his principles and stuck to them when many would have given up. He has led an exemplary life and is an inspiration to millions of people the world over. What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal? To be a successful lawyer and philosopher and advance the cause of women in my country. I am studying very hard to make my dreams come true and giving my spare time to support worthy events. Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like. I was raised in Wollega, Ethiopia, with my family. Growing up we shared a lot of love just like most families and I have very fond memories of my childhood playing with my older sister and learning new things. I had a very normal childhood and upbringing I would say. What makes you unique and different from the other contestants? I firmly believe that as humans we are all basically the same, but my guess is the way we as individuals think and approach certain situations in everyday life is what makes us all different. For example, fundamentally, we are all young ladies proudly representing our countries at the greatest show on earth, Miss Universe 2006, but the way we think is different from each other. ______________________________________ ![]()

ETHIOPIAN SUPERMODEL ...I LOVE THIS CHICK
Liya Kebede
Name: Liya Kebede Agency: IMG,Why Not Models Agency Born: Addis Ababa、Ethiopia Birthday: 13,January,1980 Height: 178cm B-W-H: 81-58-89 (cm) Hair: Black Eyes: Brown Top Ethiopian fashion model Liya Kebede was appointed the WHO Goodwill Ambassador for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health in March 2005. Herself a mother, Liya is helping WHO in its campaign to raise global awareness of maternal and child health issues, and improve the health of mothers and children Liya Kebede is a supermodel born and raised in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. As a young woman, Liya did modeling in her native Ethiopia. She has remarked that the modeling industry in that country is quite different from the European catwalks from which she is now seen ubiquitously. In Ethiopia, she had to provide her own shoes for each runway show. While in school at the French Lycee, a film director spotted Liya and introduced her to a French modelling agent. After completing her studies, she moved to France to pursue work through a local Parisian agency. After a short time, Liya re-located to NYC where she currently resides with her husband Kassy Kebede. She has been seen on the covers of Italian, Japanese and Spanish Vogue, V, French, Flair, i-D and Time's Style & Design. She is one of a very few ethnically African models featured in major fashion photo shoots and runway shows. She is often used in haute couture and other high-class clothing campaigns, as well as Victoria's Secret (though she is not the curvy, busty Swimsuit model type Tyra Banks and Naomi Campbell were). Liya has been featured in ad campaigns including Gap, YSL, Emanuel Ungaro, Tommy Hilfiger, Dolce & Gabbana and currently in S/S 2004 ads for Escada and Louis Vuitton. Liya was recently named the newest face of Estee Lauder cosmetics, the first black to serve as their representative in the company's 57-year history. This compelled the New York Times to write an article about how Liya has successfully triumphed over the challenges that face models of color in today's industry. Liya has also established herself amongst the ranks of fashion's elite on the NY - Milan - Paris runway circuit. Her big break came when Tom Ford asked Liya to walk in exclusive for his Gucci A/W 2000 fashion show. In 2005, she was appointed as WHO Goodwill Ambassador for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health. She currently lives in New York City with her husband (lucky bastard ) Kassy Kebede and son Suhul. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

You can still get banned in Nigeria. Nigeria is a land of contradictions...authors, actors and jounalists challenge society if they can get banned, then a society is not trully free. Nigeria can talk of bollywood(sad that the name is copied from hollywood) but banning an actress no matter what she did is shamefull. |

DEOLA SAGOE IS A NIGERIAN DESIGNER
![]() __________________________________________________________ Deola Sagoe has given African fashion in the 21st century the most radical expression imaginable, from the deeply rooted African fabrics to perfectly matched accessories. Known for constantly fabulous designs, flawless color combination, attention to details, perfect finish and finesse, Deola Sagoe, also a two-time international award winner creates designs that truly celebrate Africa and Nigeria. Described as the African fashion designer who is ‘’best placed to interpret our cultural diversity and artistry, our earthiness and mystery, our colors warmth and passion of the African woman in her simplicity and elegance,’’ Deola Sagoe ostensibly depicts earthly feminism in tasteful designs. Deola Sagoe refreshing exploration of that which is genuinely African evokes a subtle nostalgia for history by her favored use of hand woven fabrics, accessories like cowries, crystals, and beads, as well as the extensive use of gold. She is well-known for her dynamic signature high fashion pieces as well as vibrant prêt-a-porter collections featuring ethnocentric silhouettes for global appreciation. Deola Sagoe has also participated in fashion shows in America, Europe and Africa alongside fashion enigmas like Donna Karen, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Channel and Missioni, and was the unassuming winner of the ‘’African Designs’’ and MNET/Anglo Gold African designs 2000 (nomination by Andre Leon Tally, US Vogue editor ). Her lines have also been modeled in major International beauty pageants, including Miss Universe. Other awards and recognitions include participation in Cape Town Fashion Week (2003), The Alta Roma Moda show in Rome (2004), award winner of the Platinum Quality Award at the 10th International Star Awards in Paris (2006), and the appointment of UN Designer for the Launch of UN World Food Programme & Health Pr’s new Global campaign: CatWALK THE WORLD-Fasion For Food!
