Clintons/Birthdays

The Administrators have announced the business has been sold to Lakeshore Lending a subsidiary of American Greetings Corp who placed it into Administration. They have purchased 397 Clintons and Birthdays Stores including the brand and assets. In Glasgow they have purchased the Clintons Stores in,Buchanan Galleries,Silverburn,ST Enoch and The Fort. They have also purchased in Scotland the Birthdays Stores at Braehead and Inverness. The Braehead Clintons is still on the closure list so looks like they are moving the Clintons Store at Braehead to the Birthdays Store.

Jacobs.

Jacobs on Sauchiehall Street's safe just now.

Quote:
Camera chain Jacobs has shut down seven shops, axed around a third of its staff and has received offers from potential buyers, a week after it called in administrators.

The family-run business, which was founded in 1939, has made 46 people redundant out of a total of 154 staff.

Shutting up shop are the stores in Birmingham, Chelsea, Derby, Hull, Kingston-upon-Thames, Liverpool and Sheffield.

The closures represent more than a third of Jacob's estate.

Eddie Kerr, a partner at accountancy firm PKF who is acting as joint administrator, said: 'We have taken the difficult decision to close a number of Jacobs stores and make redundancies across the business.

'These measures are painful for everyone involved but they are essential if we are to have a reasonable prospect of finding a buyer for the business as a going concern, although we recognise there are likely to be more challenges ahead.'

Kerr added: 'We have already had a number of expressions of interest from potential acquirers and are in a position to begin negotiations.'

Among the shops to close is the Jacobs store in Hull, which employs four staff in addition to a regional manager.

Earlier today, employees in Hull were told to collect their belongings.

Jacobs called in administrators amid unremitting 'difficult trading conditions', according to PKF.

Iceland at Strathkelvin Retail Park

The new Iceland store at Strathkelvin Retail Park failed to open today as was planned, due to the company not applying for planning permission to open the store.

Hopefully it's Original Penguin since that was due to open a few month back now. Fingers crossed!

Buchanan Galleries

The Brewhaha unit and the Streat Unit next to Costa Coffee are under offer probably to the same tenant and a hording has been erected round the unit so perhaps work is starting to fit it out. On the first floor the Oil and Vinegar Unit is also under offer.Good to see some units getting let in these difficult times.

I suspect it's the lack of a suitable unit. If they want Buchanan St they have very little to choose from

I have since contacted Hotel Chocolat who have advised that they are hopeful of having one Glasgow store opened by Christmas.

There we go then. It sounds like they may be planning more than one? One in the city and the other in Silverburn I'd predict...

Menswear Retailer Appoints HDH For Stores Hunt

15/06/2012

Upmarket menswear retailer Dalvey is looking to expand and has instructed Harper Dennis Hobbs to help it find new stores across the UK.

Dalvey sells luxury men’s apparel and designer accessories and gift including watches, cufflinks and hipflasks. It has a flagship store on Dublin’s Grafton Street. It also sells its products on its own website.

It is targeting shops of 1,000-2,000 sq ft in high footfall areas in London’s West End and the City, as well as Birmingham, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool and Manchester.

Dalvey was founded in the Highlands of Scotland in 1897 as a bagpipe manufacturer. It now exports its wide range of products to the US, Europe, Oceania and the Middle East.

Cecil Gee.

This won't actually apply to the store in Buchanan Galleries.

Quote:
JD's Tessuti deal spells the end for Cecil Gee

Menswear retailer Cecil Gee's five branches are to be converted into Tessuti stores - signalling the disappearance of the Cecil Gee name from the high street after 83 years.

JD Sports Fashion last month acquired a 50% share in menswear indie Tessuti, which will see JD's Cecil Gee stores take on the Tessuti name and more premium brand mix, although there is no timescale for the store conversions.

Added to Tessuti's existing five stores - in Chester, two in Manchester and one in Sheffield's Meadowhall - the portfolio will comprise 10 stores, jointly owned by JD Sports Fashion and Tessuti.

Tessuti, which stocks brands such as Edwin, Hugo Boss and Stone Island, will manage the portfolio for JD Sports Fashion, with Tessuti buyer Mike Ashcroft instructed to take the brand mix more upmarket.

Tessuti managing director Dave Light said: "We'll be upgrading the brand mix [in Cecil Gee] to the Tessuti portfolio and taking out the mid-market brands."

There are plans to open another Tessuti store in a "major city", although Light would not disclose further details.

JD Sports Fashion was thought to be in discussions with brand agency Fourmarketing last November to rebrand Cecil Gee under Fourmarketing's Oki-ni, which operates a website and one store.

Tessuti is the latest retailer to join JD Sports Fashion's growing portfolio: it bought indie mini-chain Originals Clothing out of administration in March.

For the 19 weeks to June 9, JD Sports Fashion's like-for-like sales rose 1.5%.

On Buchanan Galleries website it says that it is called Moss now, but still gives the Cecil Gee website as its link, so I wasn't aware they had changed..

Townhouse Building.

May have already been posted on the Restaurant Thread, but I think it has some importance here.

Quote:
Thai group Chaophraya to open a restaurant in Glasgow’s Townhouse

Thai restaurant group Chaophraya has announced plans to open a new site in Glasgow in the grade A-listed Townhouse building on Buchanan Street.

The new venue, set to be the UK's largest Thai restaurant, will open in July following a £2m refurbishment of the historic 22,000sq ft building, which dates back to 1911.

The makeover will include a gold leaf ceiling and Thai Buddha statues throughout in a bid to create an opulent and cosmopolitan bar and restaurant.

Chaophraya Glasgow will span four floors of the Townhouse building and feature a bar called Palm Sugar that will be accessible directly from Buchanan Street. The upper floors will house a dining area, a VIP bar, four private dining rooms and Champagne bar.

Chaophraya manager Richard McCandleless said: "We have a fantastic location on Buchanan Street in the historic Townhouse building with capacity for over 400 diners across four decadent floors."

Executive chef Rungot Tammakeysar added: "Our menu is made up of authentic Thai dishes made using only the finest of ingredients - our dishes are simple and structured, packed full of flavour to excite the palate just as good Thai food should be."

Chaophraya currently has restaurants in Birmingham, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester and Sheffield.

Ahhh yes the Buchanan Galleries store, was the only store that the former Cecil Gee owners Moss Bros kept when they sold it to JD, with the store being rebranded to the Moss brand.
