am I right in saying that building is already a shop? Upmarket ladies clothes retailer, Jigsaw, to be precise. or are we talking about the building at the corner of queen street?

I can only describe the elevations as akin to the White Cliffs of Dover, with angled facetted glazing -crystalline type structures - with the columns also running off in random directions and angles as Will Alsop is want to do.

To be honest, it looked at though someone had dragged an iceberg onto Argyle Street, and just as out of place as the Future Systems building.
Were there ever any pictures of that scheme floating round? I read quite a lot about it a couple of years ago but never got a look at it.

IF Selfridges do decide to open at Trongate I'll be very interested to see if the original plan has been scaled down significantly and to what extent they will spend money to create a showpiece building. Original plan was a 110m facade similar in size to the London store which would have been quite something. I fear any new store will be scaled back a fair bit. Glasgow just got shafted through bad timing - the Selfridges takeover - otherwise this store may well have been open by now, Selfridges had plans to open in Glasgow way before Birmingham and Manchester.

It is unknown precisely how concrete this proposal is, Reid Architects competition winner is likely to have been superceded by a Holmes Partnership scheme and residential conversion of the adjacent Olympic House will bring about potential design consequences.

To let signs have gone up on the Town House store on Buchanan street. This store never lived up to the building its self it always seemed to be full of cheap International stock. Lets hope we get something good in its place. Also the buliding next door that was previously a theatre is also being converted into retail space so we could see a double whammy on Buchanan street soon.

Top designer stores to set up shop at Silverburn

http://www.eveningtimes.co.uk/news/d...tores_to_set_u

Kurt Geiger and Yo! Sushi for Silverburn. Well you can best your ass Kurt Geiger wont open a stand alone store in the city centre now. Let the draining of Glasgow's prime retail district commence, watch turnover, vitality and ranking fall away. Joy.

Top designer stores to set up shop at Silverburn

SOME of the UK's most exclusive shops are queuing up for space at Glasgow's £350million Silverburn centre.

Scores of high street stores have already signed up to occupy units at the mall in Pollok on the South Side due to open in October.

But today developers revealed the million sq ft centre, which will have 95 shops, is carving out a niche as a designer fashion mecca.

Luxury shoe shop Kurt Geiger, which has concessions in Fraser and Open in the city centre, is expected to open its first stand-alone store in Scotland.

It will join London designer LK Bennett, currently in Royal Exchange Square, and upmarket chain Hobbs which has a shop in Buchanan Street.

Other top names expected to sign leases include trendy London-based fashion house All Saints, which has an outlet in Ingram Street, crystal firm Swarovski and diamond store Lime Blue.

And in two other firsts for Scotland, clothing label Mexx, which has a concession in John Lewis, looks set to open its first dedicated store in Scotland, as will Japanese restaurant chain Yo! Sushi.

Richard Low of Combined Property Services, the Glasgow-based agent of developer Retail Property Holdings, said the centre is now 85% full for the October opening.

He added: "We have attracted quite a lot of new names. We've already secured the best of the High Street, but we are also attracting this layer of luxury brands and are carving out a relatively exclusive shopping line.

"Shopping centres can no longer rely on books, record and electrical stores because none of them are opening new stores."

The designer names will join the more familiar anchor stores such as Debenhams, M&S, Next, New Look, H&M and Boots which have already agreed lets along with 20 others, creating an estimated 3000 jobs.

Around 40 units are still in negotiations including the Mosaic brands Coast, Oasis, Principles and Warehouse; and the Arcadia brands TopShop, TopMan, Dorothy Perkins, Burton, Evans and Wallis.

Additional fashion firms still in talks include River Island, Monsoon, Benetton, Schuh and Bank.

Several other names are close to agreement, with bosses saying they will add an extra dimension to the centre as a "shopping destination".

Terms have been agreed with restaurant owners for 13 sites within the centre. They include Yo! Sushi, founded by Dragons' Den judge Simon Woodroffe, American-Italian diner chain Frankie and Benny's, tapas restaurant La Tasca, spicy chicken outlet Nandos, and Pret a Manger, Costa and Starbucks.

The main part of the centre will open in October with a further section following in Feburary

What does this say about Glasgow when all the good shopping areas are located on the edge of the city too far for anybody to get to? No wonder there are so many empty shops and poundlands in the city centre!

I dont like Silverburn at any level. The cladding is hideous in my opinion It looks like fucking plywood from a distance ), it will only encourage an increase in car use and the M77 will become very congested at times and the two lane motorway wont cope. And finally it will further weaken the city centre's standing.

Anyone who shops in out-of-town centres is a low-class loser, in my humblest of opinions.
I hope the place burns down.

I'm no fan of the places but I think you're being overly harsh. Simple fact of the matter is, if you're in a hurry or if it's raining, and you're going in the car, these places knock the spots off of the town centre. Same chains, free parking close to the shops, open late, indoors, secure, easy to get to, blah blah blah.

I hate that they're slowly destroying the city centre too, but they've not been so successful for no reason. Don't hate the shopping centres... hate the people who keep them in business. As I'm sure most people on here already know, I have real disdain for the general British public.

The problem is that private enterprise knows that people like these environments as they are safe, easy and relatively stress free and are completely controllable.

Perhaps the solution is to sell the entire city centre over to private enterprise so they can put a big roof over it.

Blaming the Mall is not the problem its the lack of effort the general public make of their environment, So on this one I have to agree wit you here Chief its the publics own fault so don't blame architects or councilors for the shit blame your next door neighbours and people around you for not caring. People have to remember its a democracy and the people are the ones that make the decisions not the councilors and architects.

Perhaps people need a dictator? Comments...

Glasgow Store Construction On-Track

Thanks to Martin for the photo of construction work on the future Buchanan Street (Glasgow, Scotland) retail store. The interior structure of the store has been reconstructed, and it appears the flooring has been put in and then covered with wood. However, the electrical and other work work is still in-progress on both the lower and upper mezzanine levels. Based on the construction and other information, the store could open before the end of this year.

Looking forward to seeing this finished. This store is going to be in a different league to the Birmingham and Manchester stores, but its a flagship store afterall, lucky us. £1.2 million alone on the interior then the rental cost of a prime site on one of the world's ten most expensive retail streets.

ya it will be different to all other stores think along the lines of the London Regents Street store as that was the first to open in the U.K. and stillis the U.K's flaghsip store the Glasgow store apprently wont have the theatre that some flagships have but it will be a very impressive store and probably wont have the generic stainless steel facade that most Apple Stores have it will have to suit the building alot like the Regent Street store.

This is one of the reasons why i have stoped going in to the city centre for any shoping when i can go to the likes of braehead and silver burn where parking is free and a plenty.

Whenever i do go in to the city centre i park my car @ the underground and take in a return ticket which is a lot cheaper than the parking charges that GCC impose on drivers...or a parking charge for being a few minutes late.

Where would you rahther shop? somewhere you can relax and shop @ your liesure or a hurried and flusterd time that you would worry on your car being ticketed a £40 fine.

Herald

Increased parking charges will drive shoppers out of town centres, says RAC

Quote:
Increasing parking charges will drive shoppers out of town centres, a transport organisation will warn today.

Addressing a conference in Glasgow, Edmund King of the RAC will say even a small increase in parking charges can deter drivers from taking their cars into city centres for shopping trips.

However, the financial penalty does not persuade them to use public transport instead, but rather it forces them further afield to out-of-town shopping complexes or nearby towns where parking may be free or cheaper.
