Redevelopment of Halesowen
Hello, again for the 3rd time! Don't know if there is a thread on this, sorry if there is.
I actually live in Halesowen at the moment, it doesn't matter if you don't. Just what you think to the pictures and stuff, or discuss if you've heard of the massive regeneration scheme. Basically, the town centre is pretty rubbish at the moment. A new 6,750 sqm ASDA store on two levels. -replacement of the existing multi-storey car park with a new car park providing: direct access into the shopping centre, with over 580 spaces — approximately 150 more than in the current car park, a better layout and disabled access, improved security and lighting. -the purchase, clean-up and redevelopment of the former Murco petrol filling station. - a much needed upgrade to the exterior of the Cornbow Shopping Centre along Queensway. -a new entrance at Queensway Mall level to integrate with Centro’s proposed plans for a new bus station. 30m investment I think. All ready for Autumn 2008. At the moment the bus stops are being moved to another road, choas at Halesowen with shops having to be closed, like Somerfield for ASDA to move in. Bad to say that I might not even be at Halesowen to see this happen, might even be at Uni by then.

I've heard about this as I live at the other end of Dudley from you in Sedgley, but I don't think anyone has mentioned this on here.
I've never actually been to the shopping area of Halesowen although I've driven past a few times. This does look quite good.

Ah yes the cornbow. I grew up in Halesowen, my folks still live in the town and I'm still fairly close in cradley Heath/Old Hill, so this is very familiar to me. Its a big job they've taken on there, well overdue. When Safeway got taken over by Morrisons the major store in town was then a Safeway. I think Morrisons chose not to covert and just closed the place because this Asda was on the cards even then. If it wasn't for the delaying tactics of - principally - Somerfield, who've had to vacate their premises in the centre, this would have happened much sooner. In the interim, Halesowen has been without a decent supermarket, to the definite detriment of the town as a whole. Lots of people have been doing their grocery shopping elsewhere, which in turn has caused a downturn in trade for other shops.
As Arctic says, the bus station is being sorted out first. This actually involves a relatively major excavation as two stores in the lower level of the Cornbow are being extended under the station itself.
