Another terrific photo by Chest, which I hope he won't mind my reposting here. His website the construction chest is well worth a look.

Not keen on this tower's cladding, it'll look quite prominent from the river, really should be going with something a little more tasteful.

More tasteful? I haven't seen a very recent pic of the cladding up close, but it looked good to me (although the glass is very green) judging from shots like these two and the comments below.Quote:

With thanks to london lad for tipping me off (I was slow off the mark on this one)...
British Land is buying the Harmsworth Quays printworks site in Rotherhithe (where the Daily Mail, Mail on Sunday, Evening Standard and Metro are printed). The printers (DMGT) will move to a new site in Thurrock in 2013, and BL will then take possession of the land. BL kind of dominate the area, through two joint ventures - they own (and will be extending and refurbishing) Surrey Quays Shopping Centre jointly with Tesco, and of course they and Barratt's are now completing the Maple Quays development. All much covered in this thread. I like what they've done at Maple Quays, so I'll be happy if they stick with Barratt's and simply extend that development to the printworks site. But by the time BL takes possession of the land, Sellar's plans for the Decathlon site should be more advanced, which might raise the bar a bit. One to watch. http://www.build.co.uk/construction_...?newsid=146494 http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/f32397cc-c...#axzz1zBTNj2DB http://www.standard.co.uk/business/b...s-7892438.html http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/n...ing-works.html http://www.skyscrapernews.com/news.php?ref=3116

I can understand that the council might want to get involved in masterplanning, but since they'll have to approve any development there, surely the planning system already gives them that right. I don't see why they should want to block the purchase of the land.
Edit: Looks like they really are preventing the sale, though. An update from SE16.com: http://www.se16.com/405-harmsworth-q...thwark-council

Oh so it is, thanks. Population 476 - eccentric to be naming a building in London after it...

I'm probably late with this, because it's not in the usual place, I happened across it on the Canada Water Campaign site.
![]() And a closer look at that pic...

Not news, but I don't think anyone's posted this before - a great aerial shot of Rotherhithe in 1983.
From the London's docklands, past and present blog, which has plenty of interesting stuff - and a few of SELondoner's photos (any relation?).

That's extraordinary. It looks as though at least part of the old basin (leading into Albion Dock) was filled in, and then re-excavated to create "Surrey Water", north of the old gasometer (which is still there). And the canal that now leads to Canada Water (and was the edge of ALbion Dock) is missing too.
Four years later, I was a Rotherhithe yuppie flat-dweller. £46000 - paid the last endowment payment last month! |

Well I'm no real estate expert, but I think it's safe to call that "a good time to buy"...

Haha thanks Officer Dibble! Yes that's my occasional blog which I don't find as much time for as I'd like. I thought I did post that pic here a while back but not 100% sure. Glad you like it anyway

Ah maybe you did. Anyway it's a great shot, and I like your blog.
Here's an approximately equivalent view pulled from the amazing Nokia Maps 3D:

Very good sir. And I see from these little pics stolen from waymarking.com that the cladding is coming on well:I'm back in England, and should be reinstalled in SE16 in the next couple of weeks. Looking forward to taking some pics in person...
