The phrase "Parlez-vous Anglais?" is the most essential one because if you start talking to a Parisian in English right away he or she will most likely pretend being deaf

In Scandinavia you can behave as if being in UK or USA because everybody, no matter if youngster or elderly, speaks perfect English.

Yeah it's great! I couldn't stop looking at it...

It's interesting the way the lines are all connected and the abundance of loops! No stations appear to have cross-platform interchange though, am I right or have I just missed it?

What did you call cross-platform interchange, two line on the same track ?
Paris metro doesn't have commun platform for two line.

The place between Denfert Rechereau look empty on the map, it is because This place is deserved by the RER B.

Orlyval and CDGval are lights metro for the two internationals airports of Paris.

Great map there! Thanks for posting it.

Why not join up lines 2 and 6 and create a single continuous loop line around central Paris?

That's good question, It was a lot of similar proposition, actually the line 6 is rubber tired and not the line 2.
One other problem it is that's the new train of the line 2 are in production.
The new train type of the line 6 are planned.

A other subway ring is planned in inner suburbs, it would links stations like La Defense, Boulogne, Mairie d'Issy, Chatillion Montrouge, Mairie d'Ivry, Vincennes ...
This traffic of this line is estimated at 1 million passengers per day.

^ Would this new subway ring line be metro or RER? Is it the one I've heard referred to as the "metroperipherique"? Would it be automated? Are there any other loop lines proposed for Paris, say further out in the suburbs?

Also, I see on the map that some existing metro lines are planned to be extended further out into the suburbs. Are there plans to do this on many of the lines or will the metro remain primarily for inner Paris?

Well, actually, the project now is more about 3 different lines than an actually loop. It should be 3 fully underground metro lines. However they are expected to be built in a very long time.

- The first one should serve the South-East from Val de Fontenay to Arcueil (opening planned in the early 2020's).
- The second one should serve the North from La Défense to Val de Fontenay via Saint-Denis (opening planned in the late 2020's).
- The third one should serve the South West between Arcueil and Saint-Cloud (opening time is unknown, later than 2030).

All this to say that we will all be too old to take the subway anymore when they will actually be there.

There are few extensions which are planned here or there, but they are not part of an overall full masterplan. They are more there because of lobbying local citizens than because of a real wish from the region to improve the network efficiency. Many of these few extensions have been pushed back to after 2030 (Line 11 Eastbound, line 1 westbound and eastbound, line 12 southbound, line 5 southbound, etc...).

Apparently, the top priority for the region is considered to be the tramway, not RER/metro. Many new infrastructures which were initially planned to be metro lines extensions have been converted into tramway lines. For instance, the line 14 was initially planned to take the Villejuif line 7 branch and to be then extended to the Orly airport, but finally it's been decided that it will actually be a tramway line which will make the connection between Villejuif and the Orly Airport. Same is true for line 13 which was planned to be extended from Chatillon to Vélizy... this has been converted into a tramway line operating on the same section.

Very interesting map - thanks for posting it.

Question: I know that the dotted lines represent new construction that extends existing lines, but why are there dotted lines at Les Halles station (Line 4)? Is the station being moved or expanded?

Thanks.

The dotted lines show the initial Les Halles station. It has been destroyed at the construction of the RER A/B station in the 70's to offer a quicker connection. The dotted lines near Porte de Versailles also show an initial station that has been destroyed when the line has been extended south in the 30's.

The stations which still exist but aren't anymore used are shown white and circled with the color of there former lines. It's the case for instance of Porte Maillot (line 1), Martin Nadaud (line 3), Arsenal (line 5), Champs de Mars (line 8), Saint-Martin (line 8&9), Haxo (never used)...

Finally, most of the dotted lines don't show extensions actually under construction, but hypothetically planned extensions. The construction of many of them shouldn't start before 2030, if it would actually start one day.

@ Jean Luc : There will be a Métro ring line in the inner-suburbs, but as of today the RATP (the Métro operator) and the Regional Council have not yet come to an agreement. The RATP's project is called Métrophérique, and receives support from local authorities, whereas the Regional Council proposal is called Arc Express. We don't know much more, as both are still under consideration.

There should be another ring line further out in the suburbs, but this time not Métro but more likely RER or either LRT (tram-train??). In the northern and western parts the route is already known, as the line will follow the railway ring road that circles Paris which nowadays only serve for freight transit. Moreover a bit of the western part is already in service under the name Grande Ceinture Ouest. The northern part (or Tangentielle Nord) is due to be fully open to service in 2014-2016 (works should start in 2009). For the southern and eastern parts, the route is still under consideration from the RFF (French Railways Authority).

The 3 proposals (in blue RATP's Métrophérique, in yellow Région's Arc Express, in red RFF's Tangentielle) :

edit : Metropolitan has been quicker.
