And to answer you Gramcery, YES! There are quite a few active projects.

The southern extension to Ligne 4 is already under construction (due 2012). More here: http://extension-reseau.ratp.fr/m4/index.html

As is the long talked about northern extension of Ligne 12:
http://extension-reseau.ratp.fr/m12/index.html

The shortest other one now building is the extension of Ligne 8 to the Sports parc: http://extension-reseau.ratp.fr/m8/index.html

A full list of other projects including the many tramway extensions are here: http://extension-reseau.ratp.fr/rech...ar_projet.html

There are also several longer term projects on the drawing board. Will look those up for you next time I'm on SSC :-)

There are other renamed stations:

line 1
Champs Elysees Clemenceau --> Tourism (its one of the most known touristic places around Paris, probably Champs Elysees together with Tour eiffel and notre Dame are the three most important places for the Paris tourism)

line 2/12
Pigalle --> Marketing (this is the prove that marketing works) a splendide example of how to make a touristy attraction from a regular small intersection with few red-light-district places the name 'Pigalle' is iconic and well known - maybe not in the whole world - but at least in Europe)

line 9
Saint amroise --> Milan (they have in Milan a metro station (on MM2) with the same name "Sant Ambrogio" )

line 2
Monceau --> Parks (at this station there is my fave park in Paris - Parque de Monceau. not sure why the plural here cos there is only a very small another park at Malesherbes)

line 4
Cite--> Prefet de la seine (on the Cite island there is the Prefecture)

line 2/5/7
Stalingrad --> Saint Petersbourg (actually it's wrong, i guess it schould stand for the former name of Saint Petersbourg, right? But the real former name of this city was Leningrad, Stalingrad is another city, well known because of the huge battle during WWII)

line 13
La Fourche --> Branches (at this station the line goes in two diferent directions making two different branches, also the name 'fourche' means more or less 'fork'

M13 : Liège -> Berlin because it was the name of the station between the opening (1910) and WWI (1914). The name of Liège was given because of the resistance of this city during the german invasion.

(I live just right here !)

-Place de Clichy: Postcard, clichy look like the word cliché.
-Avenue du Président Kennedy: Avenue Kaminagai, Yo Kaminagai is the head of the design of the RATP.
-Quai de la Rapée: quai de la RATP, the RATP hq is located in Quai de la Rapée even if it closer to gare de Lyon than quai de la Rapée.
-Mouton Duverné; Mouton Duverné style, first station to have the orange style in the 1970's, unfortunely it lost it in 2007 or 2008.
-Quai de la Gare: Station, the traduction of quai de la gare would be Station bank.
-Gaité: Entrainement. Gaité is the for of gaiety in french. The Rue de la gaité is full of theaters and sex shops.
-Kremlin Bicetre: Moscow, for obvious reason.

Fabulz-Falubaz! You are steaming ahead! At this rate you're gonna be the winner but all others still welcome to join in.

Your Anatol France solution was more ingenious than my thinking! Love the idea of a buried anagram, will use that more often in the future. Real answer was just the simple appearance of the word France! I'm quite transparent usually!

However (though I fell foul of your reasoning myself, see below) Univers was not The Universe but the 'Univers' typeface (used for Paris Metro signing from 1973-mid 1990's and designed by Adrian Fruitiger).

For the Univers I placed at Europe I was originally (quite possibly in a fine example of European xenophobic tendencies!) thinking about how Frutigers work has spread right round Europe from Airports to Newspapers (of course he is popular outside Europe too, which I think is why I moved it to Kleber (and probably omitted to delete it!). Also his numbering system for Univers was designed to be read any language because instead of using Bold or Light or Italic he used numerals (Univers 27, Univers 35 etc) to denote the weight.

But I later replaced it at Kleber after Strasbourg-born Jean-Baptiste Kleber who was a military leader who had an interest in Egypt. It was one of his scientists in Cairo who discovered the Rosetta Stone (written of course in three languages). Fruitger worked for a Paris foundry and developed a series of three slab-serif faces starting with 'Egyptienne'. And Univers of course the numbering system can be understood in any language not just European ones!

It's all a bit of a convoluted story that one, much more so than most, but I quite liked the idea of it!

By the way if any of this stuff interests you, and you don't think you're gonna be able to knock Falubaz off his leading position it might be worth investing in a copy of the book yourself!:
