Less contextual than the previous design but I still like it. Elegant, restrained modernism. I just hope they don't use precast.

I'd rather have the Edwardians that got demolished.

Yeah I cringed a bit too and it does hurt.. but it was over 2 years ago so it lessens the pain a little.

And speaking of massacres.. I STILL CANNOT get over the loss of this:

Just, wow. It's amazing how the character of the street is just obliterated. The cold, harsh, concrete monstrosity really stresses me out lol.

Bell Trinity Square is a beautiful, dignified, Late-Modern, granite-clad building with a soaring internal atrium. I think it's a vast improvement over the rickety buildings it replaced. There's no reason to be nostalgic over what was once The Ward. Just behind the buildings in the before pic was a terrible, tragic slum.

I like Bell Trintiy too but, I still much rather have the solid, brick warehouses and retail buildings of Eaton's.

Actually, "Toronto - Then, THEN, & Now" would be a more honest and accurate representation of our past. Not quite so romantic in these Rockford File-era pics, eh?

Today's Bell Trinity Square is way better than the rickety, decrepit buildings it replaced.

^Afraid you're wrong! The old buildings would've looked brilliant renovated into lofts--take a look at the Candy Factory Lofts for inspiration.

Re: the subject of this thread: Did Minto screw up the market timing on this building for the second time around? I think it may have....

My take on it is that Eaton's was an extremely utilitarian, budget-conscious pile of brown bricks. It could have been turned into lofts, but the building itself was prison-like. I'm as nostalgic as the next fellow, but I have a hard time warming up to the string of often ugly old Eaton's buildings that I grew up with across Canada. A few weren't bad but some were real old factory stinkers. I was the only one not weeping buckets when the old penitentiary-like box was torn down in Winnipeg. The Bay, on the other hand, made some beautiful stores. Here is the Winnipeg store:

By Mike in TO on UT.

A site plan application has been submitted to the city planning department regarding a revision to the existing site plan agreement for modification to the approved built form for a 23-storey and 10-storey mixed use buildings.
