BT Broadband Port 80 Throttling.

Unsure if any of you are aware who are on BT Broadband or BT Total Broadband. Between the hours of 4PM to 12PM they are throttling port 80 (http, what you use to view this site and any other web site) to 55kB/s.

So, if you are connected at 8Mb/s for example, you can only get a maximum speed of 55kB/s (0.44Mb/s).

Just like to make it aware that BT are ripping you/me off.

A lot of the broadband companies are doing this now unfortunately. Have they started blocking the P2P ports completely yet? Not used BT for a couple of years now.

BT have no other blocks. Just tried downloading Ubuntu as a BitTorrent, reaching 200kB/s.

http, even being one of the most used, actually uses very little bandwidth.

Atleast they don't block the 6881 port. Then I'd throw a molotov cocktail [at them].

Give it a couple of months. BT have already started imposing P2P port blocks on all the lines they lease to other companies. You're only safe from it if you're unbundled. In a couple of months they'll no doubt be imposing it on their own users too.

I don't have a clue what this means but I'm on BT Broadband... well I was, it's wireless now. You see - I know nothing! My wireless is usually on 52 mbps, but now it is 18... is this connected to what you're talking about?

Erebus.................. No.

That's the wireless speed between your computer and your wireless access point / router. We are talking the speed between your modem and you local exchange through to the cloud known as the Internet.

Go to http://bbs.adslguide.org.uk/showflat...w=&sb=&o=&vc=1

I'm user loadbang, I explained how to test to see if you account is being limited to user sora.

Alot of people get confused. People in fact mistake their connection to their router for their actual connection to the internet. If you have a 50mbps connection to your router, you could possibly send and receive that amount of data to and from your PC to your router (if you were on a network for example). Your connection to the internet is a different thing all together. Its possible to send 50Mbps (depending on the speed of your router), router to PC, but this day an age, the speeds in which we use the internet (PC to router to internet) is commonly located around the 50kpbs-8mb region depending on what connection speed you have with your ISP.

Imagine 50+Mbps internet! I fecking wish! I suppose one day, it will become the norm though.

100mb/s is already standard in some parts of the world though!

Were nearly half way to 50Mb/s. Virgin Media now have a 20Mb/s service. Its £37 a month so its expensive but its there.

most routers are at least 100mb/s wired and 5.6mb/s wireless. thats pretty much standard speed for internet in places like japan and korea, and increasingly europe.

A lot of routers are actually faster than that these days. Most NICs now are gigabit models. Mine is running with a 10GBase-LRM router and NIC with an ADSL module in the router, so my network is capable of delivering to my computer at 10 gigabits per second.

^When are you ever going to need to transfer that amount of data in a second?
Your hard drives would never be able to keep up with that kind of transfer speed even if you wanted to move that amount of information about.

BT are limiting torrents after 4pm as well.

I can get over 600kB/s down but after 4pm it won't go above 125kB/s, and the upload speed is never above 50kB/s whatever the time of day.

That's practically all day. Do you really mean 12pm (midday)?

Both my machines have three SCSI U320 in a RAID level 1 array, so they sustain about 9 gigabits per second unless I'm splitting one of my mirrors. I got 10GBase-LR as it means my network doesn't become a bottleneck.

i can think of many uses for very fast internet. for example internet tv, how abuot backing up or uploading a website or do you want to spend hours uploading gigabytes of data. if we were all on 56k connections websites like ssp and ssc wouldnt even exist!
