Nice pics Alexander! As of the 12th of December there will be private competition on the Vienna to Salzburg corridor. WESTbahn, a private venture (but French SNCF also has a stake in it), is trying to compete against ÖBB with Stadler 'KISS' double-storey trains.

Where do you seee one? I don't get the question somehow.

Anyway, nice pics, finally Salzburg gets a decent station. I hope they'll build the proposed SLB-tunnel so that it finally gets a decent connection to the centre as well.

You don't see rails very often in Austria, however they are sometimes used in underground stations. Eventually the whole section here will be covered with a roof. That might be the reason why they went with rails.

Edit: After I did a quick research it seems that ÖBB Infrastruktur (the infrastructure owner) seems to be leading in the field of high speed overhead rails (together with Furrer+Frey company from Switzerland). Austria seems to be the only country that has a tunnel equipped with overhead rails, where speeds of up to 260 kph were reached (230kph commercial).

Sittenbergtunnel in Lower Austria. Currently allows for commercial speeds up to 200kph, soon 230kph. Tunnels which are part of the new Unterinntal railway will allow for speeds up to 250kph as will Koralmtunnel. All of them are/will be equipped with overhead rails.

Construction for the 27,3 km Semmering Base Tunnel is about to start in April this year. The Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) finally have all the necessary building permissions or will receive them shortly. Completion 2024. Two years after the HSR between Graz and Klagenfurt.

Wien Westbahnhof + Bahn City is finally completed - my picture from 24th december 2011.

Well, its directly on the outer ring road (Gürtel), so it'll always have very bus car traffic. The area isn't that bad for pedestrians, you can easily get from the Westbahnhof to Mariahilfer Straße (almost a pedestrian precinct) through an underpass.

Very true.

And the inner Mariahilfer Straße will be a pedestrian precinct soon. Right now they're working out some concepts for that.

At http://www.bahnforum.info/smf/index....232#msg1317232 you can find some new interesting pictures of the new Wien - St. Pölten line, due to open in december 2012.

For example this one from the Wienerwald tunnel:

Austrian Transportation Ministry confirms start of the construction works for the Semmering-tunnel in april 2012:

http://www.ots.at/presseaussendung/O...unnel-im-april

A schematic track plan of the new tunnel: http://www.oebb.at/infrastruktur/__r...odeId=15164744

Some more interesting documents: http://www.oebb.at/infrastruktur/de/...odeId=15087100

Possible travel times once the tunnel is finished:
Wr Neustadt - Mürzzuschlag 23min (today 56min)
Wien Meidling - Graz ~1h55 min for a train with stops at Wr Neustadt, Mürzzuschlag, Kapfenberg and Bruck/Mur) or ~1h43 for a nonstop express service (from Wien Hbf: add ~7 minutes). Current travel time Wien Meidling - Graz is 2h31
