Thats not exactly true.

Not the two tubes have been connected, but the eastern (KAT1) and the central (KAT2) sections of the tubes have been connected.
Drilling the tunnel in Styria was started from two points: The eastern tunnel end and the "Zwischenangriff Leibenfeld".

On the Carinthian side this baby started drilling some days ago:

Njet.

As you can see on the photo, this machine is intended for KAT2 - the Styrian side...
Also it will start digging only in the beginning of 2013.

Not true, works are underway and in December the first new section will become operational. It will serve a section of the O bus and eventually replace the whole line (and ultimately go even further west and east)

An article in a local newspaper about the current state of construction (in German):
http://www.kleinezeitung.at/steierma...erlative.story

Photo gallery:
http://www.kleinezeitung.at/nachrich...project=112697

Nearly 5 km of each of the two tubes (each 33 km long) have already been drilled conventionally.
From january 2013 the two tunnel drilling machines will make their way from Styria towards Carinthia with a speed of 15-20 m/day.
The tunnel breakthrough is planned already in 4 years (2016).

The planned opeining date of the Graz-Klagenfurt line is dec. 2023.

Future travel times, including Semmering tunnel:
Graz - Klagenfurt (127 km): <1h / <0,75h (ordinary IC train/accelerated train with fewer stops)
Wien - Klagenfurt (332 km): ~3h / ~2,5h
Wien - Venezia SL (626 km): ~5,75h

Can I ask the locals a question about obb tickets since the conditions were in german:

I bought an open ticket from Salzburg-Zell am See because I am unsure of the time I will be arriving in Salzburg.

For this route there are two possible options: direct R/REX or IC changing at Schwarzach St Veit.

I bought the flexible ticket online by choosing the IC version. The printed ticket says "uber Schwarzach St Veit". If i arrive earlier can I catch any train (i.e a direct REX) or do I have to take a train that passes through Schwarzach St Veit?

Thank you!

The direct trains go over Schwarzach St. Veit too, so you're ok there.

It's called Business Class now though. Costs 10 Euros less, but service has also been cut.

It seems that Gösser Radler is a favourite drink of young guys on the S45 ... just my own experience.

Salzburg - Main Station: The platforms 1,2,3,4 and 5 were opened a while ago and they are building the last two platforms (6 and 7) at the moment.
The whole project will be finished in December 2013 - before the project started, the Salzburg Main Station was called the maybe most disgusting and ugliest bigger sized railway station in Austria, but now it's a jewel among all railway stations, because modern architecture and historic structures were merged in a perfect way.

And for sure I made some pics of this jewel today :

And at night (about two weeks ago):

In the last pic you can see the construction working for the last two platforms on the right side (red crane).
Especially at night this station is just amazing with it's modern feeling and those blue escalators.

Splendid. (Station and pictures)

Not only the atmosphere but also the functionality have been vastly improved. So we have Innsbruck Salzburg, Wels, Linz, St. Pölten and Vienna Main station ... all major stations on the west corridor are already or will be very soon something one can be proud of.

Nice station!

What about the new Bosruck tunnel I saw as planned on the Schweer&Wall rail atlas?
