Speaking of Nis-Dimitrovgrad motorway, Czech firm Subterra has been awarded the contract to build a 750m Bancarevo tunnel, part of the 22km Prosek-Crvena Reka section.

Work will begin this Spring , and deadline is two years.

Nice.

Will the viaduct extend the entire distance from Batajnica to Dobanovci, or will it level out with the ground at some point?

There`s no reason to build a 10km long viaduct ...

Perhaps the land is too expensive.

Land under the viaduct is also expropriated... It's not like Sofia's beltway, where for a small section you have two roads one over the other because of land expropriation costs. Here there's no other road (locals) to be put under the viaduct, so the cost of the land for the motorway is the same, no mater if it is on the ground or on viaduct.

As Chilio explained, in both cases you have to expropriate the land to build either a normal road or a viaduct.

But on that section it is on a viaduct because it has to overpass a railway, couple of local roads and slip road on that Batajnica exit, everything on a short distance, so it's normal to be lift on a viaduct

Anyway, I'm glad that so much motorways are being built in Serbia right now What do you think about connection between Novi Sad and Bačka Palanka and Ilok (HR) with some kind of expressway? It's a missing link, because the existing road is in really bad shape, and Croatia also plans to build an expressway on Osijek-Vukovar-Ilok route some day...

Maybe an expressway Novi Sad-Osijek could be built using EU cross-border cooperation program, ideally with a bridge near Vukovar, 'cos even the mention of connecting Serbia and Croatia at this town would make eurobirocrats salivate.

Even so, you'd only need bridges where the route crosses the local road, slip road and rail line. The rest of it could be on fill. It would certainly be cheaper than making it all viaduct.

Of course Only the northernmost part before Batajnica (cca 1km) is on a viaduct. The rest of the route towards Dobanovci is on a ground and could be seen on google maps or wikimapia:

Some news:

- Bidding deadline in the tender for last remaining section of Nis-Dimitrovgrad motorway yet to be awarded, between Bela Palanka & Pirot (some ~29km) , has once again been extended, this time until May 17th.

- Land expropriation process has begun on parts of the ~40km Ljig-Preljina stretch of Corridor 11 (Belgrade-Bar motorway) , where work should begin next month, thanks to recently approved ~300 million euros in financing from the Azerbaijani government.

- After some delay with paperwork, changes to the main project and issues with land ownership, construction work on Novi Sad's landmark Zezelj road & rail bridge, is still expected to start "on schedule" sometime this Spring. Financing has been secured.

Interesting historical photo I ran into the other day...

Prototype of J-22 Orao (Eagle) ground attack/close support aircraft of the Yugoslav Air Force being hauled to the then-newly built aeronautical museum at Belgrade's airport...

... where it has been on display ever since:

ontopic: Look at the huge traffic-jam behind it... It probably moved quite slow, and probably there were kilometers of traffic-jam?

Any idea when that jet was transported, my guess, 1960's. Actually when was that stretch of E70 motorway built near Beograd airport?

check two posts above yours.

First Flight 31.10.1974

So it can't be 60's. Mid-70's more likely.

Late 80's is my guess- that's when the new building of the aeronautical museum was opened.

After a long pause, work has restarted on the Kragujevac-Batocina expressway - the remaining sections should be completed sometime next year.
