Google Maps has updated satelite images around city of Niš. Images could be a month old.
Updated part is one that appears darker.

So, it can be seen the progress of ground works on motorway Niš - Dimitrovgrad, at western part of Prosek - Crvena Reka section.

Nice to see Nis area updated.

Speaking of which, here is a fresh sat image of Belgrade taken on November 14th:

https://browse.digitalglobe.com/imag...geWidth=natres

Not the best quality with a few clouds here and there, but the progress on the new SMT expressway is visible.

An average increase of only 3.600 vehicles per day. I thought Subotica - Novi Sad - Beograd would have attracted somewhat more traffic due to it being a 4-lane motorway now.

Where should this traffic come from? You don't have a choice if you want to drive from Hungary to Beograd, so the traffic is more or less the same. There are simply no alternatives where the traffic could be attracted from...

Maybe gastarbeiters from Germany that want to avoid tolls in Slovenia and Croatia and drive via Budapest instead of Zagreb?

Than they have to pay the tolls in Hungary instead and also more in Serbia. And besides that, if you really want to avoid toll in Slovenia, it's not a problem to chose the normal road in the small strip between the Austrian border, Maribor and Ptuj

And driving over Wien and Budapest is also no real fun (traffic jams)...

Does the difference of more than 4 mln between section Belgrade-Nis and Nis-Leskovac mean that almost all of this traffic goes towards Dimitrovgrad? These are the most active "gastarbeiter"-months...

Gastarbeiters from Serbia in Germany are going through Austria and Hungary, because there is only one border control (Hungary-Serbia).

But only if they are living in South Germany (e.g. Munich, Stuttgart), else they are using the German A3 from Ruhr area over Frankfurt, Nuremberg to Passau and then Graz - Maribor - Zagreb

Systemic work on improving traffic safety

Quote:
Belgrade, 20 Nov 2012 – Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic said today that Serbia has significantly improved traffic safety, but that there is still no room for satisfaction since 700 people are killed in traffic every year and 20,000 injured.

Speaking at a roundtable "Ensuring sustainable progress in traffic safety", held at Hotel M, Dacic presented figures that the number of traffic accidents has dropped and the number of deaths per year decreased by several hundred.

The Prime Minister pointed out that the plan for the last decade of reducing the death toll by 50% has almost been fulfilled, but stressed that it is necessary to continue to improve traffic safety.

Dacic added that it is necessary to act systemically, through various measures, including the provision of safer roads and vehicles.

Dacic voiced his hope that the adoption of a national strategy and a national plan, whose development is in progress, will give its full contribution to improving road safety.
