And the Fruška Gora Expressway from Novi Sad to Ruma and further south. After that and the Beograd ring road, there are not any real urgent projects, just many wish list ideas.

I am confused: is the Belgrade bypass a part of A1, or does it run through Belgrade? I guess the km-numbering of A1 goes through Belgrade?

GoogleMaps shows the part through the city as E75, and the bypass as A1.
OpenStreet shows the part through the city as A3.

If the bypass is called A1 then there should be a break in the continuity of the km-numbering, right?

officially the A1 runs via Belgrade bypass. Also officially the motorway through Belgrade is no state road anymore, so it has no number at all but on some signs it is numbered both as A1 and A3... Balkan job... what can one say

A3 officially ends at the interchange with A1 near Dobanovci.

Thanks for the info. But then the A1 has to be renumbered someday, right? Because the route via Belgrade is obviously shorter then the bypass, and the A1 was numbered according to the old road I guess.

If you are heading west coming from the south (or opposite) then taking the bypass, when completed, should be faster when taking heavy traffic in the city into account.

I think the bypass should be numbered 0, (I think this is the case in Budapest) and A1 through the city.

Do you think there is a real chance to finish the bypass in some years? The last missing link is not so big, but heavily overcrowded.

That last missing link is very much needed, it is about 7km or so, plus one tunnel I think. The government is trying to link it with the continuation of the bypass towards Pančevo, which would include a new motorway and railway bridge over the Danube. In the future this motorway would head toward Timișoara. Chinese companies are rumored to be interested in building/financing this section.

I think this is a mistake, they should build the section to connect to A1 on its own, and worry about the bridge and beyond in the future.

Was I right, is the Budapest bypass numbered as 0 (zero)?

Yes, sure. Its our dear M0, our never-to-be-finished ring road.

Belgrade at night, in a new image taken from the ISS - the new outer expressway (SMT) can be clearly seen.

We're almost past yet another deadline for the 2nd CW of the bypass between Dobanovci and the river....any news there? And what is the real hold here, this stretch has been pretty much at 99% for some time now?

I guess the road numbering is generally a mess since the A1/a3 only exist since some years. The old road through Belgrad was the M1, also existing back from Yugoslavian times. And this is the motorway now heading to Croatia (now A3) and not the one to Hungary (now A1).

We had it some days back (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpo...postcount=6627) that near Nis there is Kilometer 800 (counted from Austrian border) of old M1.

So I doubt that there is any real kilometer numbering of A1 or A3 at all since there aren't even all old signs changed... And to be honest, there are more important things to have besides a nice kilometer numbering.

When was the A4 motorway around Niš opened to traffic? Google Earth historic imagery shows it completed as far back as 2003.

It also indicates that the A1-A4 interchange west of Niš originally had a different layout (trumpet interchange?)

It is widened in sections, but I do not remember the time frame. At first the motorway ended very soon after the interchange. If you examine the central reservation (median) carefully you can see that the sections just ended before when a viaduct had to be built or widened over an existing road.
Somewhere on this motorway a small toll plaza existed but was never used as far as I can remember. Probably it was built as part of the extension of the A1 to the south.

It probably changed when the A1 was extended further south from Motel Nais. What you see are the remnants of the old single carriageway road with its old interchange configuration.

Now that the southern A1 is due to finish, are they building any new tollbooths there?? I guess new highways are not for free.

There is under construction front tollbooth near Presevo and one in function south of Nis.

I assume once they finish both motorways A1 and A4, you'd pull a ticket after Presevo/Dimitrovgrad and drive all the way to Belgrad, non-stop, and the existing toll-gates will be abandoned? And the same for the one near Sirig, once Subotica south is in operation?

Is the 2nd carriageway west of Ostruznica bridge open for traffic now?

Is there any news about the contract? Expected opening still late 2016?
The project page (which has been updated, see subsequent quote) does not indicate any deadline....
