Construction update:

Belgrade's new bridge across Sava river (929m in length, 45 meters wide - 6 traffic lanes + 2 rail lines for future metro)
Once complete, it will be an integral part of Belgrade's inner ring road.

And a little bit of new photos from those two ten-kilometer sections between Novi Sad & Subotica/Horgos/Hungarian border:

Most important part - super-shiny crash barriers

Why does Belgrade need 2 motorways/expressways so close to each other? Why don't they make the existing motorway through Belgrade part of this future ring? What will happen with it when this ring is completed? Will it be downgraded to an ordinary 4-lane urban road?

The current motorway through Beograd is highly congested. 100.000 - 150.000 AADT on 2x2 to 2x3 lanes.

The southern beltway is too far out to relieve traffic through the center of the city, so this bridge is more than welcome

But I think it will be too close to the existing motorway on some places, and it will run parallel with it.

Traffic flow is bad, as a result of many entrances/exits near Gazela Bridge.
Too many lanes merging in relatively short distance, simply must create a bottleneck.

With a desire to offer convenience to drivers with many entrance/exit ramps, the results turnout to be inconvenience of slow and jammed traffic.
And traditionally, the drivers are not courteous, making the merging even worse and traffic jam bigger.

If there is one separated/dedicated (let say leftmost) lane for transit traffic, 2-3 km ahead of the bridge, the traffic flow could much better and AADT higher.

Very soon, the bridge will be under overdue maintenance repair.
In first phase the work will be done on bottom sections of the bridge, but later work will move on upper part, and it will be lane closures.

One of the more heavily trafficked Belgrade roads - Vojvoda Misic Boulevard.

Due to its proximity to Sava river, sometimes it gets flooded so scenes like these are not uncommon....

These scenes are very uncommon! Do not exagerate all the time.
However, when it happens, its a great opportunity for a photo op!

"Horgoš-Novi Sad complete in 2010"
7 November 2009 | 16:21 | Source: Tanjug

Quote:
NOVI SAD -- Infrastructure Minister Milutin Mrkonjić said that work on the highway from Horgoš to Novi Sad is expected to be completed in 2010.

Mrkonjić visited the construction site of the Beška bridge and the by-pass route around Novi Sad, where second layers of asphalt are being put down, after which traffic lights and safety nets will be installed.

According to officials of the companies working on the sites, Nimbes and Putevi Užice, the two lanes of the highway from Novi Sad to Horgoš will be finished by the determined deadline of November 29.

Mrkonjić said that the quality of the construction work is excellent, and called on the companies to participate in the announced tender for the construction of a new, 11 kilometer-long section of highway north of Novi Sad.

General Director of the Serbia Roads public company Zoran Drobnjak accompanied Mrkonjić on his visits to Corridor 10 construction sites on Saturday.
