China's SDHS to complete two Corridor XI sections in Serbia by end-2017

Quote:
BELGRADE (Serbia), June 7 (SeeNews) - Serbia's government plans to start operating the two motorway sections, part of Pan-European Corridor XI, built by China's Shandong Hi-Speed Group (SDHS), by the end of 2017, infrastructure minister Zorana Mihajlovic has said.

The government plans to put into operation stretches on Corridors X and XI with a total length of 80 km this year, Mihajlovic said in a video file posted on the website of Serbia's infrastructure ministry on Tuesday.

In 2013, Serbia hired Shandong Hi-Speed Group to build the Obrenovac-Ub and Lajkovac-Ljig sections of Corridor XI motorway, with a combined length of 50.2 km. The works were financed with the proceeds of a $334 million (296.5 million euro) loan from the Export-Import Bank of China.

However, the government will be unable to put into operation all road sections of Corridor X in Serbia in 2017 and is ready to terminate the contracts awarded to some companies by the end of the construction season due to delays in construction works, Mihajlovic said.

The most serious problems faced by Koridori Srbije, a company set-up by the Serbian government to manage works along Corridors X and XI, are related to the construction of the Bancarevo-Crvena reka section and of the tunnels in the southern part of Corridor X in Serbia, the director of the firm, Zoran Babic, said in the video file.

The Bancarevo-Crvena reka stretch is being built by a consortium of Greece's Aktor and Italy Terna and the deadline for the completion of the project is November 30, 2017, data from the corporate website of Koridori Srbije shows.

In April, Zorana Mihajlovic said the government planned to discuss the inclusion of more companies in the construction of Corridor X, as Aktor did not have enough workers to complete the project by the end of 2017 as planned.

Corridor X will connect Salzburg in Austria to the Greek port of Thessaloniki, passing through Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia and Macedonia. In Serbia, the project includes the construction of Belgrade bypass motorway, as well as two separate sections, linking Nis to Merdare and to the border with Bulgaria.

Corridor XI is a ferry/motorway corridor linking Italy's Bari to Romania's Bucharest via Montenegro's Bar port and Serbia's Belgrade.

Serbia has finally started slapping fines on tardy contractors...

Serbia fines Spain's Azvi, Rubau over Corridor X delays

BELGRADE (Serbia), June 13 (SeeNews) - Serbian state-run company Koridori Srbije has imposed a 100,000 euro ($112,179) fine on Spanish civil engineering groups Azvi and Construcciones Rubau for delays in the construction of sections of Corridor X, the director of the Serbian firm said on Tuesday.

The fine was imposed as the reasons presented by Azvi and Construcciones Rubau for the delay in the construction of a section of Corridor X were unrealistic, Zoran Babic said in a video file posted on the website of Serbian news agency Tanjug.

"Along with the objective reasons, there are unrealistic explanations for the delays on Corridor X. For example, when a company, in this case Azvi and Rubau, delays by ten days the relocation of a launching gantry from Dzemin Do to Vrla bridge," Babic told reporters in the video file.

The fine concerns works on the Manajle tunnel – Vladicin Han stretch of the Caricina dolina – Vladicin han section of the southern part of Corridor X. The construction of the section is financed by the European Investment Bank (EIB) and its deadline was set on May 31, 2017, according to the corporate website of Koridori Srbije.

Last week, Koridori Srbije, a company set-up by the Serbian government to manage works along corridors X and XI, said that the most serious problems faced by the firm are related to the construction of the Bancarevo-Crvena reka section and of the tunnels in the southern part of Corridor X in Serbia.

Following some recent critiques and even the very first imposed monetary penalties by the government, we're witnessing increased activity on some of the, previously, most delayed sections of Corridor 10...

China's infrastructure investments in Serbia reach 5.5 bln euro - Serbian govt

Quote:
BELGRADE (Serbia), June 15 (SeeNews) - Serbian infrastructure minister Zorana Mihajlovic said on Thursday China's investments in the country under the "One Belt, One Road" initiative currently stand at 5.5 billion euro ($6.1 billion).

Serbia plays an important role in the "One Belt, One Road" project and wishes to take advantage of its full potential, Mihajlovic said in an interview with China Central Television (CCTV), according to a Serbian government statement.

More Chinese investments are expected not only in Serbia, but in the entire region, as the "One Belt, One Road" project needs a well-developed infrastructure, Mihajlovic said.

Chinese companies bring new technology and know-how to Serbia, she noted.

Serbia cooperates with China on the project for the modernisation of the Belgrade-Budapest railway, part of pan-European transport Corridor X, and the construction of a motorway connecting Belgrade to Montenegro's Bar port, as part of Corridor XI, the Serbian government said.

Last month, Mihajlovic said she signed in Beijing two memoranda of understanding (MoU) with China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) for infrastructure works with a combined value of 2.5 billion euro. The contracts are for the construction of the Preljina-Pozega and Pozega-Boljare stretches of a motorway which will connect Belgrade to the border with Montenegro, and Fruskogorski Corridor, a 123 km-long road in Serbia's Vojvodina autonomous province.
