Something that had been rumoured for a while was confirmed yesterday - can't really say I like this heavily CIA-linked firm operating in Serbia

Bechtel eyes road construction project in Serbia

BELGRADE (Serbia), June 20 (SeeNews) – Serbia's infrastructure ministry said on Tuesday US civil engineering group Bechtel has expressed interest in participating in the construction of a road connecting Trans-European transport Corridors X and XI in Serbia.

The company plans to present its offer after studying the details of the project, the infrastructure ministry said after a meeting between minister Zorana Mihajlovic and Bechtel officials.

Construction works on the project, named Morava Corridor, can begin in 2018, as the project designing project is currently being prepared and a tender for the project documentation has already been called, Mihajlovic said in a statement.

Negotiations should be held on the financing model of the project which also needs infrastructure protecting the road from potential floods, the ministry said.

The Morava Corridor will be 109 km long and will run between the towns of Preljina, in Cacak municipality, and Pojate, in Rasina District, representing a link between Corridors X and XI.

Corridor X will connect Salzburg in Austria to the Greek port of Thessaloniki, passing through Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia and Macedonia. Corridor XI is a ferry/motorway corridor linking Italy's Bari to Romania's Bucharest via Montenegro's Bar port and Serbia's Belgrade.

A very small project in the whole scheme of things but could be interesting on a slow news day...

Some key infrastructure for Belgrade's new central rail station was just completed, itself part of a billion dollar project
to upgrade the city's railway bypass...new station will replace the old, freeing up precious land in downtown core for redevelopment:

Quote:

Access road at the Prokop station opened

Traffic junction with infrastructure and bridge construction for access to railway station Belgrade - Center, known as Prokop, has been opened today.

During the opening, mayor of Belgrade, Sinisa Mali, pointed out that one large investment totaling RSD 429 m was implemented and the works were done within the deadline, Beoinfo reports.

This way, Mali said, we fully put into operation a station that was opened at the beginning of last year.

- Prokop station is necessary to move the main railway station from the Sava Amphitheater and at the same time to open space for the second stage of development of the Belgrade Waterfront project. I am satisfied with the works done, especially aesthetic solution, and now we have to choose one of interested investors in order to finish construction of the station building, and with commercial facilities end this important project – mayor said.

According to him, the start of new bus station construction in Block 42 is expected by the end of the year, and it is planned that the works last for 18 months.

Bechtel is a very bad company, in Romania the delivered no more than 50km of motorway and some work on an other ~60km for ~1,5 billion euros in about 10 years.

So they will open the bus station only by summer or autumn of 2019.
Is that as well the predicted moment of closure of the current railway terminus in the center of Beograd?

Unfortunately, in Serbia, deadlines are merely a suggestion. Ask again before the next elections, I guess

With Kragujevac-Batocina expressway nearly complete, all signs point to the fact that this will be the next expressway to be built....Novi Sad-Ruma:

Most recent video of it - you can still see snow in Fruska Gora national park:

I would probably say this is most likely the fault of the corrupt Romanian government rather than Bechtel themselves. Bechtel have done a fantastic job in the Republic of Kosovo on both of its motorways (R7 and R6), yet things were less favourable on their project in Albania due to the terrain.

As the new boulevard is still nameless, the public is being encouraged to come up with a name.

Personally, I'm leaning towards towards the "6th fighter squadron" - a Yugoslav air force detachment based at the old airport that used to exist in the place of the new boulevard...

Outgunned & outnumbered, they took down a large number of Luftwaffe aicraft during the April War of 1941...

There is a famous (among the construction world at least) quote here in Hungary dated back to the middle or end of the 90's when Porsche Hungária was building their HQ in Budapest. Strabag was the prime contractor. The head of Strabag Hungary told the anxious boss of Porsche Hungária when he was complaining about Strabag not meeting the construction deadlines the following:

"Do you know what all deadlines feature?

They come, come, come, then go, go, go..."

Well, at the end Strabag ended up getting a huge penalty.

New dates. It's probably the best option to open [1nd c/w] in zone of Gradinje cut-slope,instead of temporary road.

A4: south of Pirot-North – Pirot-East ~6.7km (June 2013 to September 2017)
A4: Pirot-East – Dimitrovgrad-West 14.3km (November 2010 to September 2017)
A4: Dimitrovgrad-West – Gradinje 8.6km (2010 to September 2017)
