Turkish President Erdogan arrives tonight in Serbia for a 3-day state visit, and according to sources, something might actually be signed regarding the long talked about Belgrade- Sarajevo motorway, that Turkey is willing to finance to the tune of 850-1 billion euros.

So, Turkey is officially on board the Belgrade-Sarajevo motorway project ... the respective ministers of infrastructure signed an agreement today in regards to the matter. The motorway will be a branch of our Belgrade-Bar motorway, running from Pozega to Kotroman border crossing - some 850 million euros are required for this ~60 kilometer stretch of highway.

They made a good decision to build via Užice and Kotroman to Sarajevo, as opposed to the Tuzla route. Has the BiH / RS side defined where the motorway will be built through their territory?

Since the Turks are financing does that mean they will build it with their own workers, and will they collect the toll when complete?

I think Republika Srpska want to build that motorway, too. At least ist leads from Belgrad directly to Pale. But I also want to do a lot... Just the money is missing and therefore the problem.

And if somebody looks at the terrain from the border to Sarajevo, he will see that it will be not easy to build a motorway there. This will cost a lot of money... And if there is enough traffic to justify this? I doubt it.

According to eyewitness accounts, things are about to heat up on Belgrade's motorway bypass. The new worker camp is in place, as well as a large "Azvirt" billboard.

The task of completing Belgrade's most crucial project has been given to a joint consortium of our Chinese & Azeri friends

It is important to link major cities in the region like Belgrad and Sarajevo. This is the best route to use because it is the most direct, and for Serbia the least expensive since only the section from Užice/Požega to Kotroman would have to be built.

Regardless of the politics it appears this motorway will be built in the coming years.

Belgrade's motorway bypass should now be the top priority for Serbia's motorway network.

If you go from Sarajevo to the north and then to the east or to the east and then to the north is more or less the same. The new motorway would save maybe 50 km (maximum) compared to the motorway over Doboj and Croatia. That normally don't justify the expenses.

So, it's mainly just a political thing, connecting Belgrade - Pale, as I said.

Unlikely. Even RS has more important projects to built like Prijedor - Banja Luka, Doboj - Modrica and Modrica - Bijeljina . The region east of Sarajevo has a low population, is ecenomically unimportant and has difficult terrain.

So, if it will happen, they would have to find some contractor who is paying for it and gets the toll in exchange. But given the expense and the costs, I doubt that somebody will be eager to do this. Even the Chinese are looking very carefully if a project would generate money... And sources like EBRD will be out because of the facts I wrote.

If it really will be built, then it's just because of politics.

I think the priority for Republic of Srpska is to connect Banja Luka with Bijeljina. So, I think that for Rep. of Serbia won`t be difficult to build new motorway from A2 (E-70), e.g. next to Ruma via Šabac or Bogatić. I`ve driven there couple of times and the terrain is quite flat.

When it comes to bridge-building in Europe today, the new Kerch bridge in Russia's Crimea has grabbed all the attention...but almost equally impressive is the new Zezelj bridge in Novi Sad.

Launching of the second arch is about to begin...

Long overdue it will be a welcome addition in Novi Sad. To bad the Žeželj Bridge will not have two lanes in each direction.

It looks increasingly likely that American firm Bechtel will be awarded the contract to build the so-called Morava corridor, a crucial interconnecting highway between Serbia's Corridors 10 & 11...

Infrastructure minister met today with the US delegation, including US ambassador and Bechtel representatives...

These sections are opened a few weeks ago.

Ciflik - Stanicenje
Pirot-Nord - GÜG Gradinje-Kalotina/BG

Google Maps are not reliable for new updates. Try Here Maps or similar..

Stanicenje - Pirot-Nord next year

What is the current AADT for the Morava Corridor? I am thinking that this corridor should be an expressway similar to Kragujevac-Batočina. Only emergency lanes every few kilometres, and the use of round-abouts. This would drastically reduce the price of this highway. Also I think the eastern end should go toward the south not the north, perhaps toward Jasenje/Deligrad, or even Aleksinac. As it seems to me that the greater amount of traffic will come from the South-East towards the north-west.

No, the A5 should be a true motorway with full emergency lanes. It will run on flat valley ground all the way, so widening it for 5m is not much of a difference as is for motorways on hilly or mountainous terrain.

The eastern end connecting with A1 at Pojate is the best solution, as the majority of the traffic will go northwards towards Belgrade. The terrain is also difficult from Kruševac to Deligrad.

Here is the detailed plan for A5, click for a larger picture:

Thanks for the detailed plan for A5. I am still concerned about the AADT and the cost. Would it not seem more likely that northbound travelers would use A2?
