Electronic toll collection system introduced on Belgrade-Nis highway

Quote:
Belgrade, Dec 21, 2009 – Serbian Minister of Infrastructure Milutin Mrkonjic attended today, at the Bubanj potok toll gate the opening of the electronic toll collection (ETC) system for the Belgrade-Nis highway.

The public road company "Putevi Srbije" put this system into operation at the 10 main toll gates at the Belgrade-Nis highway. The toll gates in question are Bubanj potok, Mali Pozarevac, Vodanj, Smederevo, Batocina, Jagodina, Ražanj, Aleksinački rudnici, Aleksinac and Trupale.

Director of the Sector for information technologies in transport for "Putevi Srbije" Milenko Despotovic explained that this system enables drivers who have a special device in their vehicle to travel from Belgrade to Nis without having to stop at toll gates.

He added that this project was developed by the Mihajlo Pupin Institute and that only domestic contractors and resources were used.

General Director of the Mihajlo Pupin Institute Vladan Batanovic said that this is one of the most modern systems in Europe, which was developed by domestic professionals, according to the European standards which will be obligatory as of 2014.

Batanovic said that the project cost €12 million and that it has already been exported to Montenegro and Congo, and negotiations are underway with two large countries.

He said that the ETC system already exists on the highway between Sid and Belgrade. He explained that the cars have a special TAG device, from which the system collects the data and withdraws money from the card, after which the gate opens.

Everyone that signs a contract with "Putevi Srbije" can become a user of this system. The user also has to purchase the device and put an initial sum on their card.

Turns out Kosovo has decided not to link Albania with Serbia with motorway because the Serbian part because of a lack of interest on the Serbian side. Shame really, Nis to Merdare is only about 60km. Anyway, they have now decided to build the motorway to Besia (Village near Prishtine) and upgrade the existing Prishtine Skopje highway to motorway standard.

That's bad to hear. Anyway, I don't think the motorway would have had much traffic, given the Kosovar passport issues. I guess it's best to first slowly build a motorway towards Shkoder, MNE and Croatia until things settle down and cooperation between KS and SRB becomes possible.

lot of pleonasm here.
On topic. Building motorway toward MNE is very hard, because of the mountainous relief.

They will not be building motorway to MNE on the Kosovo side but they are near completetion to connect Montenegro with expressway up to city of Peje... From Peje to the MNE border is only 10-15 km... The mountain in the Kosovo side is quiet short. They will however bring a motorway right up to the FYROM border and ALB border. The existing road from Peje to Montengro is in very good condition anyway.

The road from Nis to Bulgarian border will be a real motorway or a 1+1 expressway, without at-grade intersections and without passing through villages?

I know it's just a normal road now, but I've asked how it will be in the near future (2012-2013).
