Very interesting pics, thanks for posting!

Apart from some serious roadway deformation due to heavy traffic, the road, toll stations and service areas look good

Are trucks banned in Serbia on super-hot days? I believe they do this in Bulgaria to prevent damage to the soft asphalt. Most of the asphalt damage seems to be due to this.

^ In Romania they are, but those are very rare situations and only if the super-hot days are at least several in a row.
The asphalt is worse in Romania than in Serbia, maybe?

Ah, apparently they do have to twin some bridges. I thought all civil engineering structures along this road were already prepared for 2x2 lanes. There's your main reason why E75 cannot be twinned in a couple of months Bridges take longer to construct.

There is the (last picture) interesting sign concerning European Union just at the Serbian/Croatian border - put there "in advance" /or some structural support from EU/ or the kilometersposts on the motorway Beograd - Sid (maybe the remain of the YU-times and the legendary autoput). The junction at Nis is another place there to be pointed out...

that motorway longs for major reconstruction, both asphalt and signs. i hope soon we will see it

As far as I know Serbian can be written both in Latin and Cyrillic script.

Nice report.

I've noticed this car on your report from Serbia as well as from Austria. Were you traveling together or was is coincidence? B stands for Varna, yes?

Yes, we traveled together in a group of 6 cars from Varna to one small Austrian city, named Mayrhofen, where we stayed for a week ( that can be seen from the dates of the reportages before and after Austria ). We went skiing there.

@ChrisZwolle - please delete my post #1769, it's on the previous page, right before the reportage and it's empty.

I'm wondering, since you have travelled across both Bulgaria & Serbia, how would you rate & compare the road quality, service/rest stops, driving culture, etc, etc in these two countries?

Serbian scripts are both Latin and Cyrillic. Serbian is not like Russian and Bulgarian that use only Cyrillic. So no there are no problems with both scripts.

I agree with you on the asphalt part, but not with the signs part. Signs are mostly good.

There is no place for comparison between the Bulgarian and Serbian motorways. It's well known that the Bulgarian motorways are the worst in Europe, and I can only prove that point with many evidences:
1. Even the best sections in Bulgaria are worse than the main part of Serbian's motorways in terms of asphalt quality. Here is an example - compare my photos of the motorway between Beograd and Nis with one of the official photos of the opening of Marica motorway near Harmanly - http://www.napi.government.bg/images...6046642981.JPG . Which one is more wavy? Or compare it with my photos of Hemus motorway.
2. We lack any places for rest on the motorways. You can stop only at the petrol stations. There are some very primitive parkings at the newest sections of Trakia motorway near Stara Zagora, but they lack toilets and rubbish-bins, not to mention something more.
3. Our motorways lack any kind of maintenance, like grass cutting, crash barrier repairing, sand collecting after the winter and so on.
4. We don't have lightening at the junctions, nor those white-black pillars at the end of the lane, which are very helpful at night. The paint, used for marking the lanes is with lower quality too, or is even missing at some places, so driving at night in Bulgaria is a nightmare.
5. I can write much more, but I thing I gave you the answer.

It's also a perfect description for the old Romanian A1.

i meant on those old which are still there.
and about new - i don't like when left and right table on portal don't have the same height. that happens because of double names and too large font.

btw, is ETC working, or you still wait it to be introduced?

The fresh tarmac looks mostly good, the old one looks okay as well, the really old one is obviously due for a replacement. I have two wtf?! questions:

What's this, at this small stretch the road is completely sunk in, but not at any other part, so someone probably was scamming on the works:

http://media.snimka.bg/8371/022998075-big.jpg

I was about to ask what these bins are doing next to the road, but they only start after the sign for the border crossing, so they are obviously there so that people from waiting vehicles in a long line don't throw their trash onto the grass:
