SouthPark
San Fernando, Trinidad West Indies

With 200,000 square feet of Retail-Restaurants, 141,000 square feet of Class A+ Office space, a 10-screen Movie Theatre, and a 150-Room Hotel and Conference Center, SouthPark ushers in a new era of quality to the Southern region of Trinidad and Tobago. Located at the proposed interchange of two major highways in San Fernando, Trinidads second largest city, SouthPark will be a regional center for both businesses and residents.

San Fernando General Hospital - An embarassment

My comments are not directed to the photographer of this photograph of the San Fernando General Hospital.
What I cannot understand is that the government of Trinidad and Tobago has spent millions of dollars to build the Chancery Lane Complex and the Academy for the Performing Arts in San Fernando. However, that is the San Fernando General Hospital? SHAME! SHAME! SHAME!
Absolutely Shameful. Is that what you call skewed priorities?

National Academy for the Performing Arts - South

To Cantrini and others interested on the progress of this, you can view a picture of work in progress on the udecott website:
http://www.udecott.com/index.php/cc/...rforming_arts/

Sorry I couldn't get pictures sent to me yet (I guess they've put it on the backburner in their list of daily priorities. lol) But I have heard that construction is at a well advanced phase.

PM promises Marlene new waterfront for Sando

By Clint Chan Tack Tuesday, August 10 2010

PRIME MINISTER Kamla Persad-Bissessar yesterday promised newly appointed San Fernando Mayor Marlene Coudray that Government will partner with the San Fernando City Corporation (SFCC) to construct a brand new waterfront for the southern city.

Persad-Bissessar made this pledge shortly after Coudray was sworn in as mayor at the San Fernando City Hall auditorium on Harris Promenade. Promising that the ruling People’s Partnership will restore San Fernando’s status as the country’s industrial capital, the Prime Minister observed, “If San Fernando rises, Trinidad and Tobago also rises.”

Observing that waterfronts are a hallmark of many cities, Persad-Bissessar said Government and the SFCC will work together to make the San Fernando waterfront “one of the most beautiful places in the world.”

She added that Government’s vision was to provide “San Fernando with what San Fernando wants.”

In her maiden address, Coudray identified the widening of Harris Promenade and partnering with NGOs to manage the city’s dog pound as some of the priorities of the SFCC.

Declaring that transparency and accountability will be the hallmarks of the corporation under her watch, Coudray said, “The buck stops here with me as mayor and the other councillors seated here.”

She pledged she and other councillors will be accessible to burgesses and all of them will understand “the consequences of tardiness and inaction” should they fall short in the course of their duties.

Having served five past mayors as the SFCC CEO, Coudray said she believed her experience in local government will be beneficial to the corporation.

Coudray’s husband is former PNM Labour Minister Larry Achong. She is the fourth woman to serve as San Fernando Mayor.

As much as I love these proposed projects etc I think it's time the government get its priorities sorted. In light of the extensive flooding taking place in Trinidad- adequate and proper drainage is an issue that reqiures immediate attention aswell as flooding prevention methods. I hope this is dealt with along with the many issues facing TnT at the moment e.g. health care and construction of quality hospitals and quality care from hospital staff . Of course the crime issue and diversifying the economy so we can be less reliant on the enegry sector. renewable energy!!!! tourism!!!! agriculture!!!. Focus on infrastructure instead of building big buildings- that can come later. Once there are well paved, well maintained roads we should be fine. The highway to Point Fortin/ Mayaro from Sando should be built also aswell as the grade separation of the CHR highway. A POS bypass freeway- proper parking in the capital etc.

Well said. I guess, there ought to be some balance in how the Government deals with its priority list. I am from the South city although I currently live in the T-dot (Toronto). The San-Fernando wharf is an embarrassment right now. So lets hope that action immediately follows talk, along with the other infrastructural needs that we have. But, you how things work in TnT. Plenty talk, then maybe a decade or two later - action. Then scandal, investigations and allegations of corruption, then a new regime comes into power and the cycle begins all over again.

Talk of Arima development also...

New mayor ready to 'rock' Arima
By Anna Ramdass anna.ramdass@trinidadexpress.com

Story Created: Aug 9, 2010 at 11:58 PM ECT

Story Updated: Aug 10, 2010 at 2:35 AM ECT

ARIMA'S new Mayor Ghassan Youseph said he is ready to rock the eastern borough and appealed for a new Town Hall to be constructed.

Youseph was elected to replace Adrian Cabralis at a ceremony at the Arima Town Hall yesterday. Patricia Cedeno Metivier was elected as deputy mayor.

In his inaugural address, Youseph outlined number of "development goals" he has for Arima and his vision to transform the borough into a clean and attractive place.

Although Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and Local Government Minister Chandresh Sharma, who were supposed to attend the ceremony were not present, Youseph still made his appeal for a new Town Hall.

Youseph said that it was a shame that Arima, the home of Lord Kitchener and many of our country's artistes does not have a proper place for the arts.

He said in the construction of a new Town Hall a structure could be accommodated for the performing and visual arts.

Youseph said the new Arima council will partner with the Arima MP, to aggressive lobby for a full fledged hospital for the Arima area and a judicial complex. He also assured that there will be no discrimination under his mayorship.

"I want to immediately assure the burgesses of Malabar/South (which was won by People's National Movement candidate Anthony Garcia) that the new politics of which we speak, guarantees that there will be no discrimination against this district on the basis of their electoral choice," said Youseph.

He said Garcia will not be left in the cold. "I assure you councillor, as the lone People's National Movment (PNM) member you won't be lonely here," he said.

Youseph said under his mayorship he envisions a new transportation hub at the site of old railway station.

The court house, he said, is gone and now rented in cramped quarters as he pointed out some of the borough's issues.

"The fact that the clock on our Dial has been static for some years appears to be symbolic of Arima's stagnation as a town," said Youseph.

"Over the next three years as the young people would say, we are going to rock this town," said Youseph.

yeh i love Sando although im from north when i go back i spend most of my time there because my dads side of the family is from south well dow village. So i know the state that the wharf is in and its in dyer need of renovation- i saw an illustration of what was planned for San fernando from about a decade ago and it was really nice. I hope that is what they plan to do to it. Things take so long to get done home its unbelieveable- the Point highway has been promised for so long but again it looks to be put on the shelf again.
