I'm still hopeful that the Hadid proposal will go through. That looked incredible.

Well if it`s any where as successful as the restoration of our Manchester Victoria Station it will be a building to be proud of, look forward to seeing Flinders Station reborn.

AUSTRALIA: A joint venture of Aurecon, Jacobs and Mott MacDonald has been appointed as the technical, planning and engagement adviser for the Melbourne Metro Rail cross-city tunnel.

Please someone in power have common sense and change the name of the CBD South and North stations to Flinders Street and Melbourne Central....both these new stations are basically attached to existing stations and should be branded as such ( even if you have to walk through a pedestrian tunnel to reach the new station)
If its good enough in other large western cities ( I am thinking of London and Paris) then its good enough for Melbourne.

This thing is scheduled to open in 2026, which might mean 2046 (not sure if AUS is like USA when it comes to this type of stuff), so I am sure in the three decades til then they will change these names many times.

Will this line be part of the current s-Bahn style network, or will it operate as a stand alone metro?

It'll be part of the heavy rail system. It just adds more capacity to the city centre, freeing up space for more services using the loop.

I think we're meant to be changing to this map soon too. It's already up at a few stations. The current map is pretty confusing the use. The grey lines are inter-city trains operating throughout Victoria.

More Melbourne crossings to go
19 May 2015

AUSTRALIA: The Victoria state government announced on May 19 that it had awarded a A$524m contract for the elimination of four level crossings in southeast Melbourne, as part of a commitment to remove 50 of the city’s busiest and most dangerous level crossings over eight years.

A consortium of John Holland and KBR has been selected to remove the crossings at Burke Road in Glen Iris, Centre Road in Bentleigh, McKinnon Road in McKinnon; and North Road in Ormond. As with recent crossing removal projects elsewhere on the Metro Trains Melbourne network, the railway is to be lowered into a cutting, which will require the reconstruction of the stations at Bentleigh, Ormond, McKinnon and Gardiner with low-level platforms and fully accessible entrances
