This project is staged in a couple of different segments. I think that's why they have identified three succinct areas. I'll let you know after I drive it later tonight.

L’ouverture à la circulation de ces deux segments, qui relieront le tronçon existant de l’autoroute 35 à la route 133 à Saint-Sébastien, est actuellement prévue pour la fin de 2013.
I had no idea "segment" worked in French....

There are a lot of things to see and do in Ottawa. I would recommend a stop by the Parliament buildings, the Rideau Canal is cool as well, particularly the stepped locks just east of Parliament. There is a pedestrian mall, numerous museums and galleries, and there is a pretty popular casino in Hull.

I didn't get up to A-5, but here are some shots of the new alignment of A-50:

Those are some absolutely gorgeous highways

Northern Ontario and Northern Quebec highways really look great. The new ones anyway

there is this Highway 400 which is under construction between Barrie and Sudbury.
But A-50 is not North. It is just north of Ottawa on Québec side.

A couple videos of Canada's widest segment of highway: the 401 in Mississauga between the 403/410 and 427 with 18 lanes.

Eastbound during the day:

Westbound during the night:

More info in the video descriptions.

More stuff from Ontario (although I can already hear the crickets chirping, and see the tumbleweeds blowing on this forum in the aftermath of a Canadian post).

Highway 404:

The extension of a four-lane freeway some 12km northerly

Looking south from Doane Road:

Looking south towards the Doane Road overpass:

Looking north from just north of the Doane Road overpass. An interchange has been roughed in alongside the future 404 carriageways despite the fact that it has been deferred.

Looking south towards the Queensville Road interchange (the next overpass north of the Doane Road structure). There will be an interchange here:

Highway 7:

The widening of an existing roadway to a four-lane rural cross-section:

Looking west from west of Kinsale:

Two views looking easterly through Kinsale (the first from 2006, the second during construction in 2012):

Further North:

Highway 69:

Extension of four lane highway south of Sudbury. Photo location is circled.

View looking north towards the wildlife overpass that was constructed just north of the Hwy 637 interchange.

Isn't highway 7 supposed to be part of the tollway extension?

No. The 407 will be on a new alignment.

So they're first 4-laning the road, and then it will be replaced by a new limited-access highway? Weird...

A 17 kilometer section of New Brunswick Highway 1 opened as a twinned highway last Friday.

Durham Region (where the highways run) is a rapidly developing region within Toronto. The new infrastructure is being built in order to serve this new growth. An additional major east-west arterial road (Taunton) was four-laned late last decade.

Just for reference 500,000 new residents moved to the Greater Toronto Region between 2006 and 2011. Do cities in Europe still expand this rapidly?

Not as fast but still, London grew from 7.3 to 8.2 mln between 2001 and 2011.
And that's only London boroughs, excluding wider metropolitan area.

Two "vintage" videos of driving along highways 401 and 403 through Mississauga:

401 (1991)

403 (1992)

Will they ever reconnect 407 with the 401 in Durham Region or further, then 407 could be a "proper" bypass (for those who could afford it ).

The 407 will have a connector back to the 401 east of Oshawa which will serve as an eastern by-pass of the Toronto metro area. That stretch is supposed to open in 2017.

Great old videos! I had never seen those before. So much has changed, there was nothing along the 401 through Mississauga in 1991, its crazy how much the GTA has grown.

Can anyone tell me about the lane configuration south of the Port Mann Bridge. It looks as though only 3 lanes will be passing under in each direction. The 4th lane in each direction seems to turn into the exit ramp.
