Highway 401, Ontario

Ontario Expanding Highway 401 in Cambridge

Ontario is widening a 4.2-kilometre stretch of Highway 401 between Highway 8 and Hespeler Road from six to 10 lanes to help improve traffic flow in the Region of Waterloo.

* Repairing, repaving and expanding a 4.2-kilometre section of Highway 401 from six to 10 lanes
* Building one High Occupancy Vehicle lane in each direction

Construction is targeted for completion by summer 2019. The $112.8 million contract was awarded to Dufferin Construction.

Is it really necessary to add an HOV lane to a small urban area freeway? Carpooling is declining in Canada. The market share is only 5.1% in Toronto.

HOV never makes sense... but the government in power loves that shit.

The lane requirements of 401 there are a bit misleading... Kitchener-Waterloo region is small urban area, but Hwy 401 has a lot of trans-province, international traffic, but also a lot of commuting and commercial traffic from the K-W area to the Greater Toronto Area. A decent house off Hespeler and Hwy 401 in Cambridge is easily $ 100 000 cheaper than its equivalent in Milton (401 and Hwy 25) for example.

It is curious to note the decline in carpooling between 2006 and 2011 in the Greater Toronto Area in the study you cited. In 2006 I think HOV lanes did not exist in the GTA at all, and by 2011, there were many long stretches of HOV 2+ lanes opened to traffic on congested corridors (QEW from Brant St to Trafalgar Road, Hwy 403 from Hwy 407 to Hwy 410, Hwy 404...) and even with a reason to carpool (faster traffic flow), less people did

There isn't an HOV on that stretch, from my understanding. the plan is to have HOVs on the 401 from Hespeler road to the 403 in Toronto long term (in an 8+2 setup), but it ends before highway 8 to prevent people cutting across the entire highway from the HOVs to get to highway 8.

HOVs in Ontario are going to become HOTs soon anyway, and will see much higher usage rates.

Also, I believe I remember seeing somewhere that carpooling rates have been increasing in the GTA recently, if not Canada as a whole. These HOV lanes are also heavily used by regional transit buses.

Ultimate 401 setup is 8+2 HOTs from Cambridge to Milton, and a 12 or 14 lane collector-express system from Milton to Mississauga with the leftmost lane being HOT as well.

Having a 50km+ long HOT lane will certainly help encourage carpooling in my mind.

The Ontario HOV implementation seems so wasteful though... you can easily fit 2 lanes in the space of that wide HOV lane and buffer

At least 8+2 HOV is less obnoxious than the 6+2 HOV madness on the Halton QEW...

Highway 401

Herb Gray Parkway Now 90% Complete

Stretch of Redeveloped Highway 401 Corridor To Open This Weekend

An eight kilometre-long stretch of the redeveloped Highway 401 will open along the Rt. Hon. Herb Gray Parkway corridor this weekend for the first time. The project is now 90 per cent complete.

Drivers will be able to drive uninterrupted through the parkway without traffic signals - one of the key benefits of the redevelopment. Traffic will also be shifted away from ongoing construction on the final section of the parkway.

It is anticipated that construction of the project will be completed by later this year.
http://news.ontario.ca/mto/en/2015/0...-complete.html

I'm not sure until where it will exactly open to traffic. The entire extension of Highway 401 to Ojibway Parkway is about 11 km long, so it suggests it will open to the E.C. Row Expressway / Huron Church Road interchange.

what a strangely expensively-made project with huge overpasses and effectively cut-cover tunnels for seemingly no reason. Weird to see from the agency talking of "value engineering"

I would have just made Hwy 3 on either side acting as collectors like Hwy 40 in western Montreal for example and saved so many overpasses

The new below-grade highway will be a dead-end initially at Ojibway Parkway on the city’s west end until the new Detroit River bridge is completed in 2020.

I wondered about that as well. Sunday to Monday after midnight would technically be June 29.

I want to say that Canadian colloquial language would imply "overnight June 28" to be somewhere between 22:00 28.VI.2015 to 05:00 29.VI.2015

So, I found my way down to Windsor, and all I can say is wow. The Herb Gray Parkway is amazing. Really impressive piece of infrastructure.

thats an expensive highway project at $23 million per KM, MTO has been doing its northern highway expansions for more like $10 million in equally difficult terrain.

Alas, this will finally connect the New Brunswick / Nova Scotia freeway network with the Ontario / Quebec network.

I was thinking that the section is u/c and should be opened in 2015!?

QC-A85: De Saint-Antonin – Saint-Louis-du-Ha! Ha! 36.2km (2012 to December 2015) – projectmap

The project link does not work anymore but I think I should trust the press release and remove the project from my "u/c project list", shouldn't I?

The press release also confirms that a 7.5km u/c section should be opened in fall 2015:

QC-A85: Note-Dame-du-Lac – Lac Martin 7.5km (2012 to Fall 2015) – projectmap

This is A-85 taken from this May. The southern section should be completed by the end of the year:
