But for sure you need them
what can you do otherwise, make a grade-crossing on the Skytrain tracks?
It isn't dead-end nor really a highway chunk at all (it is way too slow and narrow), it is more like the Van Horne Viaduct in Montreal than something like the Gardiner Expwy.

Probably they can put traffic lights on the viaducts themselves that go red for no reason periodically and then they will be satisfied

Not really sure how facetious your last post was, or how familiar with the area you actually are, but you're not succeeding at winding me up - I am a bike commuter. The Skytrain tracks are elevated throughout this area, but pass under the viaduct structures in a roughly NW-SE direction. At the west end of the viaducts, because of the grade differential, Skytrain enters a tunnel under the downtown core.

The viaduct structures (3 lanes in each direction) were built as replacements for the original Georgia viaduct, which ran above the main CPR yards that used to be on the site prior to Expo. This is the historical significance. The replacement structures were built in anticipation of a freeway link that was to run from Highway 1 in the east either along 1st Avenue or the Grandview Cut to connect with the east end of the viaducts. This proposal was voted down by the city government of the time (Art Phillips and TEAM) and never raised again.

Surface roads to the east of the structures (Prior and Venables Streets) serve as commuter routes to and from the downtown core, connecting with Georgia Street (eastbound) and Dunsmuir Street (westbound) downtown. Despite our current civic government replacing a lane of westbound traffic with bicycle lanes, there is still heavy commuter usage.

The structures have been used for a number of commercials and will prominently feature in the upcoming Ryan Reynolds Deadpool movie.

"Opening up the space for development" also means that you can kiss the Andy Livingstone park space goodbye, as that would immediately be part of any redevelopment. My anonymous sources at city hall have told me that there is considerable pressure from developers to rezone the park for more condos. In my opinion, definitely NOT the best usage of the space.

I'm always impressed how cheap and crappy looking the Ontario guide signs are like those. Yuck

I drove through the 401/412 area twice over the weekend, the signs for it posted above are in the EB direction (Montreal) but not installed in the WB (Toronto) direction yet

On one hand it is so refreshing to see minority-language signs posted by the provincial Transport Ministry, having lived for many years in Quebec.
But sometimes the writing is so bad... I would consider "sombre" to mean dark, like they want it to, except dark in like a sad or depressed way, not that it lacks illumination
Then again this snowshed does look pretty sad

The only reason the sign is bilingual, is that it's in a National Park and thus REQUIRED to be in both English and French.

Highway 2, Alberta

Queen Elizabeth II Highway/41 Avenue interchange opens

At 9 a.m. on Thursday, November 19, the interchange at Queen Elizabeth II Highway and 41 Avenue SW will open to traffic.

The $205 million project, which began in summer 2013, helps meet current and future traffic demand in the Capital Region and facilitates travel both within Alberta and inter-provincially.

The project includes:

* construction of a new interchange on QEII Highway and 41 Avenue SW, including a grade separation of the new Canadian Pacific Railway intermodal facility
* realignment of QEII Highway from south of 41 Avenue SW to Ellerslie Road
* creation of a bridge crossing Blackmud Creek
* upgrading of 41 Avenue SW to handle the traffic generated from the new intermodal terminal

An official grand opening event for the interchange will take place in December.

Is there any press release about it in English? Damn Quebec...

If I'm not wrong (looking at google translations) there is still gap in the freeway between Quebec and New Brunswick. Is it the 40km they want to build in phase 3?

Anyway, here few shots from Okanagan Connector aka BC Hwy 97C

Lots of warning signs. No surprise as the highway crosses mountain pass at over 1700 metres above sea level which is higher than the Kicking Horse Pass in the Rockies

"De" isn't part of the name, it's just St Antonin

This is the 40 km sectiont the articles is talking about
Google maps
The last section of phase 2 that opened was entirely along Lac Temiscouata. The sections up until NB have already been opened in the past 2 years
This is the section that just opened yesterday

Highway 63, Alberta

The Highway 63 / Parsons Access Road interchange north of Fort McMurray, Alberta. It is the second northernmost interchange in the province. There's another interchange about 20 kilometers north along Highway 63 to an idyllic place called Tar Island.
