I've never seen any mod posting here.

It's like this is the forgotten corner of SSC...

You are annoying everyone, because this is supposed to be a discussion about the TCH, not about the Struma. Also you must not know much about highway design and construction, because it is proven that tall-wall barriers, are much better at separating different sections of a freeway. Guiderails are only used on the edge of freeways.

Anyways back on topic, the main reason that the TCH doesn't come to Toronto is that it is not necessary since the 401 does the same thing, and the TCH would be just co-assigned to it.

I drive on the TCH out between Fredericton and Oromocto occasionally, and I must say it is quite nicely designed freeway, much better than the Vanier through Fredericton.

Are there signs which are signing the other end of the TCH? Like some sign that says the endpoint is 4860 miles away?

A forest fire near the Trans-Canada in BC, 2003:

No, unfortunately no such signs exist. There isn't even a proper ends marker in Victoria. (Not sure about the other eastern ends).

No, there are no mile markers or anything along it, it's really just a superficial designation. You might as well call Britains M1 "The Super Happy Freeway of Bliss". :P

No where in Northern Ontario are their mile markers, just the occasional sign telling you how many hundreds of kilometres the next town of 50 people is.

A part of the Trans-Canada is the Confederation Bridge that connects Prince Edward Island in the Atlantic with the rest of Canada.

Construction began in the fall of 1993, and continued for three and a half years, and cost $1 billion. The 12.9 km long two-lane bridge opened on 31 May 1997.

It is a multi-span post-tensioned concrete box girder structure. Most of the curved bridge is 40 metres (132 feet) above water, and it contains a 60 metre (198 feet) high navigation span to permit ship traffic. The bridge rests on 62 piers, of which the 44 main piers are 250 metres (825 feet) apart. The bridge is 11 metres (36 feet) wide.

Tolls are paid only when exiting Prince Edward Island; the current toll rate is $40.75 for an automobile, with other rates for different types of vehicles. Pedestrians and cyclists are not permitted to cross; however, a shuttle service is available. The shuttle service was free of fares through 2005, then $4.00 per pedestrian or $8.00 per cyclist since January 1, 2006 have been charged only when exiting Prince Edward Island. The speed limit on the bridge is 80 km/h (50 mph).

And here on the west coast in British Columbia, there have been visions of a 30-40 km 4-lane bridge/underground tunnel/undersea tunnel from Vancouver to Vancouver Island, costing as much as $20 billion.....quite difficult to build considering this is an earthquake zone.

Actually, there's a monument in Victoria on Vancouver Island that marks the end of the Trans Canada highway in Western Canada:

Lol, you have to pay 40 bucks to leave the island? I'm amazed their population has gone down if that's the cost!

^ That I knew about, but what I meant was there is no signage indicating the end of BC's Highway 1, in addition there is no eastbound marker for quite some time north of the end of the highway either.

Although, this is "the marker showing the actual start point", as stated by Wikipedia:

And to answer your question as to why Struma motorway is cheaper, that's because the labour in Bulgaria is cheaper. I don't know about the quality of work in Bulgaria, but I'd like to point out that shiny barriers and signs constitute very little fraction of total funds allocated for the road construction. You are paying too much attention to minor things instead of concentrating on the major issue - for how long a road will preserve the acceptable quality?

For instance, in Russia new roads look very sexy for the first year. Then, after the first winter you get huge cracks and pot holes that need to be filled regularly. At the same time, in Finland the roads are somehow able to withstand extreme temperature changes.
And one last thing, sorry for hijacking the thread. The Struma motorway was opened last October and already survived heavy snow and ice with NO one singe hole, it passes through a high terrain of 800 m close to the Vitosha mountain with itīs microclima and thereīs a lot of snow there winter, the Vitosha mountain is 2350 m high and often snowdirfts come down the Vitosha mountain and land on the Struma motorway. We are in EU now, donīt think they make shit and donīt generalize. Itīs very typical that someone from more western part of the world thinks eastern europe makes bad things, i hate this but donīt worry, sometime it will be the other way arround.

Somehow, I'm doubting this.

The highways are in much better condition around Vancouver than in, Northern Ontario. Seriously, you try build the Alaskan Highway or Trans-Canada and not have it crack. You couldn't.

He's talking about a stretch of road that 'often' gets snow drifts. He still hasn't grasped how long the TCH is, or how many months of -30 to -40 degree weather it endures.
