Nice clip. Anytime I drive in Belgium, I always appreciate the way Belgians use motorway. Best lane discipline ever and real driving pleasure.

Are you sure it's not the quality of the roads that makes you feel at home?

Hmm, actually I am not sure after you said that. Maybe it's the matter of subconsciousness.

(no worries Josham, I did not change my opinion. Anyway, Daviedoff's movie shows how well disciplined your compatriots are.)

Not a big difference if it comes to the road quality.

Anyone could explain this fact, here you can find 3 bridges, two in operating and the third was build for?

Lane discipline in Belgium is not bad, although you do have the occasional middle-lane stickers when traffic is light. The load of trucks is also a factor, the right line is often underutilized, because people don't feel like moving from the right to the middle lane all the time.

The driving style is sometimes a bit aggressive around the larger cities, but nothing exceptional like you would see in Italy or Greece.

I don't get your problem. There are 2 roads and a railway, so 3 bridges... or do you mean that the bridge also run through in the wide median? In that case: It's done to be able to easely widen the road in the future if that would be needed. that's why the median is that wide to... At least that would be the most logical explaination. I don't know why this median isn't that wide more south tho.

This road was ment to be a full freeway but was never completed. It was ment to end south of Eindhoven and have a junction with the Dutch A67 bu The Netherlands didn't want the road at that time. As a result, the town center of the Dutch town Valkenswaard is run over by cars everyday... Just go a bit more north and find that never completed junction (that was recently in the Guess the Highway thread) with a few miles of freeway (now used a local road) that just ends in a field.

As for speeding tickets:
The measured speed is reduced with 6 kph (for speeds below 100 kph), above they apply a 6% rule.
The 6kph is actually alot, given that the devices used are much more accurate.

If the corrected value is over the speed limit, but less then 10 kph, fine is 50 EUR.
If more then 10 kph, fines are different based on speed limits:
- speed limit 30: 50 EUR + 10 EUR/(kph/(speed limit + 10))
- other speed limits: 50 EUR + 5 EUR/(kph/(speed limit + 10))

If over 30 kph too fast in speed limit 30: court.
If over 40 kph too fast in other speed limits: court.

If over 20kph too fast in speed limit 30: possibility to temporarily loose drivers licence.
If over 30 kph too fast in other speed limits: possiblity to temporarily loose drivers licence.

N-90 (Liège - Namur)

Several weeks ago I took a day-trip to Belgium, visiting the citadelles of Liège, Namur

Here are some pics of N-90. It follows the river Meuse in a heavily industrialized area.

It is a cool road to drive through, old-style expressway with at-grade intersections and noisy concrete pavement

1. Leaving Liege

2.

3.

4. One of the many industrial conveyors, ducts and pipes crossing over the route

5. Let's make some noise (speed limit there 120 km/h)

(cont...)

7. Nuclear powerplant. It has more physical security (fences, armed guards) than many Belgian army facilities I've visited

8. This route doesn't have bypasses, as a highway was built to bypass the whole area (E-42)

9. Old bridge in Huy

10.

11.

12. Very scenic sector near Samson

13. Crossing under E-411

Citadele d Namur

The roads giving access to the Citadele of Namur are very beautiful, or were beautiful, with their full autumn color:

N4 Gembloux - Ottignies

This is an early fast road link between Bruxelles and Namur, since bypassed by the much more modern E411

Still, they didn't downgrade the whole thing and left it in place

N25 Ottignies - Nivelle

This expressway is undergoing renovation/repaving

1. New asphalt (not porous though)

2.

3.

Bonus pic: la Butte du Lion, one of those places where European history was really changed forever.

Today the Flemish minister of Mobility Hilde Crevits announced the roadworks planned for 2013 on the Flemish Highways:
about 170 km of highway is gonna be renovated. At this pace Crevits hopes to catch up with neighbouring countries in 2015

further more there are 2 new plus lanes (like on the E313 in Antwerp)on their way:
one on the E314 between Heverlee & Wilsele and another one in Antwerp on the E19 towards Breda between de junction E19-A12 & Sint Job in't Goor

Plus some (12km) noise barriers in Lummen, Kontich (E19) and in Aalst(E40)
The article + a little map (for those who understand dutch):

Considerring there are only about 30 million dutch speakers on de planet. I don't think so :p ps: did you want to ask if not everybody understands dutch or did you want to say not everybody understands dutch? :p

' Begrijpt niet iedereen Nederlands?' vs ' 'Niet iedereen gebruikt Nederlands?' Vs ' 'Niet iedereen gebruik Nerderlands.'

First two are a question. Last one is just an announcement. Same linguistic rules as in English

Headline of the day: "One motorist in five drives without headlights at night":

Survey conducted on presumably-lighted Belgian freeways, but still....

I meant to ask "Doesn't everyone understand Dutch?" Wasn't sure I was getting it right. :-/
