The bridges in between were built for a 'super' highway, from Antwerp to Brussels without any exits except at Mechelen. These plans (golden seventies...) were never realised. Since a few years there's a train track between Brussels and Mechelen instead.

The railroad is only south of Mechelen (the image was dated July 2013).

The E19 is an interesting case, because many motorways are today undersized for its traffic load, but E19 between Antwerpen and Brussels seems well capable of handling its daily traffic without excess congestion, even without the "megafreeway" plan of the 1970s. Of course A12 also siphons off some local traffic.

No, they intended to expand the motorway into a "superhighway" with 2x2 lanes added in the middle that would only be used by traffic coming from or going to Antwerp, Mechelen or Brussels. As they later on realised that the traffic congestion wasn't caused by the width of the road, but the interchanges in Antwerp and Brussels, they abandoned the plans. Between Brussels and Mechelen they've been able to find a use for that wide median by using it for rail tracks. Between Mechelen and Antwerp it is mainly used to house a forest called Witte Kinderbos to commemorate the victims of the Dutroux paedophile case.

Interesting fact: this forest is/was apparently listed in the Guiness book of World Records as the narrowest forest in the world.

I think it's quite impressive that the authorities managed to get everything towed away and fixed up in 20 hours time. It can't be easy to quickly record what happened, tow them off and then repair the road surface in such a short timespan.

I noticed that stretch of E40 is now in very good condition. I drove it last weak. However, once you have to enter the RO is seems once again the road gets in disrepear. Defenately in worse condition then a year ago....

The first image shows Mechelen in the centre-right and Weerde and Zemst to the left. This photo must've been taken several years ago seeing that the new L25N railway line that now rests in that median is not yet present.

All bridges across the Albert Canal are being replaced by new bridges with higher clearance.

Higher and wider.

In the near future river barges should be able to stack two containers on to eachother and pass all bridges without waiting.

It's about time, it's one of the busiest industrial inland shipping routes in Europe.
