According to the information at Google Map Maker, this segment is currently closed for maintenance. It was set as such on 24 November, so not too long ago.

When a segment is grayed out like that on the map, it usually means that the road is closed for some reason. The same should normally be visible on the Reyers viaduct in Brussels, though something seems to be going wrong there at the moment.

"The motorway service area of the future," it says here:

Looks sort of like an Illinois Tollway "oasis," actually....

Antwerp ring road

Hi,

Can anyone give some update of the current status of the proposed highway ring road around Antwerp?
I have seen numerous proposals, all being heavily opposed against for various reasons (Lange Wapper-bridge, Meccanoo-tracé, BAM-tracé and so on).
For me, the current situation is very unclear.
Has a specific proposal already been chosen, is there already a final design and are there any (legal) hurdles that have to be dealt with? Just some silly questions.

Thanks in advance for clarifying!

This is the current masterplan:

The so called 'Oosterweelverbinding' is named on the above map '3e Scheldekruising' and 'tunnel onder de dokken'. So it's the completion of the Antwerp beltway. The project had some protest and therefore a lot of delay. But with the right-wing government we have now the project is on the right track. Road works are expected to begin in 2018 or so. However the financing is now causing a bit of trouble. The previous arrangement was not approved by the EU because of new budgetary rules there. A solution is to finance it completely with private money. The government claims that this will not cause any delays.

Then there is also the proposed A102 and R11bis. That's the eastern beltway. Completely tunnelled, 16 km long. That project is officially planned. But I doubt it will ever be built. The costs are underestimated. Officially it will cost about the same amount as the Oosterweelverbinding. But any idiot can see that a tunnel of 16 km will likely be more expensive than a tunnel of just 6 km. And the R11bis is quite complex since it's underneath an existing road (with houses). Another complexity is the tunnel under the runway of the airport. So a two level tunnel is needed there what makes it even more complex. See this diagram and this image:

What are those "parallelwegen" along the E34 and E17?

They will get feeder roads alongside the highway for local traffic. Probably to reduce traffic on the N70.(hence the new tangent roads towards those parallel roads to get traffic off the N70 I guess. I 'm not from the region but I must imagine the N70 is badly conjested in peak hours, like a lot of N roads in Flanders to be honest.

Thanks a lot for the info.
I did a short google search and found this website: http://hoevlothet.nu/
Seems to be a site from the government to inform the public about the status.

Let's hope there will be no more delays...in The Netherlands, investing in highways has proven to be very successful in reducing traffic congestion. And that is exactly what Antwerp needs.

That site is not updated a lot and quite propagandous. Since you're Dutch I suggest this long topic here at SSC: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=518058. That gives you a better idea of the actual situation.

Normal quality I guess. There are no indications that suspect otherwise. New roads are good any-way.

Also: the maintenance budget is now much higher than 15 years ago and sufficient. At least for highways. There is some work to eliminate the maintenance backlog on the regional roads ('gewestwegen'). Both are maintained by the regional governments (Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels).

The communal roads (gemeentewegen) on the other hand lack sufficient funding. It's no surprise that usually the worst ways in Belgium are communal roads. But it depends on the richness of the municipality. Knokke-Heist eg. has good roads, Sint-Joost-ten-Node (the poorest municipality) the worst.

I think this is also because the provincial roads were transferred to the regions (Gewesten) and municipalities. So the municipalities now have much more roads to maintain.

The countryside is also heavily developed (especially in Flanders), which results in the need of a higher road standard for a large portion of the road network, which in turn needs funding.

But local governments having the worst-maintained road system is not limited to Belgium. It happens in many countries. Roads are often transferred to a lower government which does not have the same funding sources that a higher government has.

Plans have been revived to build N73 across the 'ghost bridge' near Beverlo. It will connect to E313. The bridge was built in 1977 but never used.
