It is surely hotter in Los Angeles, they have concrete freeways everywhere and that never ever happens

Never? I can't believe that. And it's not the temperature per se but the sudden rise of temperature.

It's different. Concrete slabs can handle that, however concrete roads poored in one continious stretch can't. I don't know how the LA freeways are, but most concrete roads are slabs rather than poored all at once. I also don't know if the E 34 is slabs or poored all at ounce.

Belgians, if you could manage to do something about your roads by July 5th, when I'll be there, I'd be much obliged. :-P

Really can't remember ever seeing a freeway like that, unless they were working on it and had dug it up.

(Now, potholes after a bad winter, that's another story....)

Well i've never seen it myself before , this is also a first time. However i've seen it happenings in local roads before. Especially when concrete surface and concrete road bricks are used as a mixed surface . For instance 2 years ago a road in my town was damaged afther a hot summer day when the speed bump layed in concrete bricks was pushed up because of the expanding concrete surface of the rest of the road.

Very hot in this part of the world is 30+ °C (86F+)
I believe it was around 32°C (89,6F) in that part of Belgium yesterday.

As for my story it would have been around the same temperature.

Actually I can't remember something like this in the freak summer of 2006 when temperatures reached up to 40°C.

I booked a room in a good hotel in A'dam (got a good price), then discovered it had no air-conditioning. Inconceivable here. But it looks as if it gets cool enough at night....

We reached about 95F yesterday. Three days in a row above 90 (32C) is the official definition of s heatwave. Needs to be about 100 before weird things happen to the roads....

The only place I ever slept in all Europe with A/C was in Belgium

That airconditioner was the worst useless piece of crap I ever tried to use It would also turn off if I left the room since needed to take my key-card out of the "electricity on" slot. It reminded me of a certain Mr. Bean episode where he has problems with a incomprehensible electricity metering device.

curiously the hotel room had wood floors which I had never experienced before or since, and a complimentary fist-hole in the wall. It was inexpensive, only 120 EUR plus BTW a night

Hmmm. I'll bear that in mind...

Although at this point, most of my rooms are booked, so I'm stuck with them, at least the non-refundable ones.

it's OK, no A/C but plenty of reasonably priced cold beer to keep you comfortable

I've went to many hotels in my own country mostly only 3 star hotels and they all were very clean, had A/C and no holes in te walls( wtf they shouldn't even rent such rooms) So I guess you had bad luck? Surely of you complained they would have given you a better room without extra charge. I've also had a hotel with wooden parket floors , I don't know what is strange about that. Most rooms had carpet though and I usually don't like carpet so I was happy with the wooden floors. Don't book anything under 3 stars, you'll end up with motel like conditions if you want a room that is not cramped, book at least a 4 star hotel. 5 star hotels are just damn right expensive.

we were kind of stuck with this hotel, it was a business trip and it had ideal location only a 10 minute walk from the factory in southern suburbs of Antwerpen. But if I had rental car surely I'd go elsewhere The floors weren't parquet but wood planks (the kind that are maybe 100 mm wide and varying lengths placed in houndstooth pattern). It's normal in a house but never seen in hotel... The outside architecture was somewhat Brutalist in use of concrete. It reminded me much of those batteries from the Atlantic Wall

at least the breakfast (12 euro!) included bacon and Speculoos I'm still searching for Speculoos here on the other side of the ocean, so far without succes.

I once had a business trip in the Toronto, Canada area and the hotel caught me taking a croissant from the "breakfast bar" along with pouring a coffee and a glass of orange juice, I was presented with a bill for $20 and tip (I poured the coffee myself!) The croissant wasn't even good, it was refrigerated crap

Do they also eat speculoos cookies with coffee in the USA?
If anything, Lotus speculoos cookies with coffee are the best

The location probably doesn't mean anything good :p
However don't misjudge the hotel by the outside. I 've been in hotels here that looked absolutely drab from the outside but where splendid on the outside. Likewise I've been in hotels where the outside was all layed marble and the inside was so drab and worn out and in bad shape...
