Hopefully a second Minneapolis disaster is not needed to fix this bridge

Two trucks crashed from the R1 Antwerpen ring road onto the Antwerpen - Gent railway line. Apparantly, one of the trucks wanted to take an exit at the last moment and hit his colleague and both of them plunged from the embankment on the rail road, according to the local newspaper.

One of black points of the Brussels ringroad.
They'll break it up and rebuild the whole thing with extra lanes all along the north secton from the E40 west to the E40 east with a maximum of 17 lanes in Zaventem.

Nice. I always notice the stop-and-go traffic is much worse on the left lanes. I usually stay between the trucks in slow-moving traffic jams, then I can just mosey on with 20 km/h in 2nd gear instead of accelerating and braking all the time from 40 - 0 - 40 - 0 etc. Saves a lot of fuel.

I am a MASSIVE fan of Belgian Motorways/Autoroutes. They have a wonderful 70s feel about them for some reason.

Belgium should be proud of its network, its really good.

I have a few questions....

Is "that it" in terms of building any more motorways/autoroutes?
(For example there is no A5, A6 and the A28 is TINY, surely more is planned?)

Lighting in Belgium seems also unique, I have not seen these types of lights anywhere else. (The long almost "tube like" orange glow lights with graceful but massive columns).

Are they found anywhere else? who manufactures them? are they changing lighting to high pressure sodium types (pink amber glow?)

hope someone can help....thanks M56PHIL

You must be one of the only fans of Belgian motorways .

And yes, apart from some widenings and new regional roads (north-south connections), I don't think there will be any new motorways built in the next 10 years. The political mentality is very public transport minded, so building new roads is out of the question.

Also, Belgium already has a very extensive network, there are only a few places that could benefit from new motorways.

I think the first task for the government should be to drastically change the ground usage plans. Now everyone can build next to any road, even if it's an important connection. If a lot of houses are built, they just drop the speed limit.

In Holland for example, they built new living areas next to an important raod/railway, but they don't just build houses next to every existing road. Also, in Holland there are a lot more people living in city centers.

I love them as well. Not because they are so good, and the outstanding signage , but because the nostalgic feeling when driving in Belgium.

De Lijn and SNCB/NMBS do a very good job I think. Especially the nice attractive intercity connections all over the country with modern trains and no price system in different train-classes like DB does -.-

It's reasonably good yes, although especially in SNCB/NMBS there's a lot of money wasted due to high inefficiency.

De Lijn does a good job in the big cities, but outside of that it sometimes can be a mess.

I used to take a bus and train connection to go to school, I had to take the bus to the local railway station and then in the city I study I had to take another bus to get to school. Now I've just skipped the buses and I have two bikes to get to/from the railway stations, because the connections are so that the bus arrives 2 minutes after the train left and leaves 2 minutes before the train arrives,... And shit like that is very very common.

A truck with an excavator on it's trailer damaged an overpass on E313 at Geel-West beyond repair. The viaduct has to be torn down.

At least that doesn't just happen here in the Appleton, WI USA area - several bridges over US 41 in Appleton and its east suburbs have been hit and damaged by similar vehicles over the years.

I certainly do hope that the Belgians send a bill to the lorry's owner for the work like WisDOT did for all of its US 41 bridge repairs.
