@ Suburbanist I'd love to see more pics from regular roads, is it possible?[/QUOTE]

Yes... when I travel there again. I've been living in NL not for a long time, so this was my first road trip to Belgium with the purpose of it being a road trip :p

In anticipation of an approaching snow front, all truck traffic has been shut down in the southeastern half of Belgium. This includes motorways like E25 and E411.

^We want to prevent trucks gliding of the steap hills
Traffic got stuck a whole day with the last snowfront due to sliding trucks...

Afther a lane count map Chriszwolle made I wanted to do the same thing. I didn't use a special program because I don't have one... First map I ever made in my entire life (don't be to hard one me)
This map is not very accurate but it gives a nice overview of how many lanes Belgian highways count.

The ring of Brussels and Antwerp were difficult to do, I had a hard part figuring out how many lanes there are...

You missed the section of E25-411(A4) near Etalle (Prov. Luxembourg). It's recently widened to 6 lanes by narrowing the median. It's only some 5km long for now tough. Maybe the long-term goal is to widen it simularly further east untill the border?

If I remember correctly there are a few short sections of E411 south of Namur which have 3 lanes per direction.

In the Ardennes almost all motorways have an extra lane in the uphill direction for trucks and buses that slow down due to the incline . You probably mean those?

But like a said I really had trouble counting...I couldn't make up wich was ramp/highway on some parts.

Like here: Do you count that as ramp or not?

Yes there are some sections that have 3 lanes in one direction and 2 in the other... I just didn't made a scale for the those kind of stretches...

I would count through lanes, not just merging lanes between two exits. Maybe only if it has a significant traffic function (for example between two motorway interchanges).

Interesting, I've read the Deurganck Dock (opened in 2005) in the port of Antwerp can produce 20 truck departures per minute if it operates at full capacity. In 2009 it was operating at less than 50% capacity, but it will probably increase this year. Which means the amount of truck traffic can significantly increase on E17, E19 and E313.

20 truck departures per minute = 40 movements per minute = 2.400 trucks per hour = 57.600 trucks per day if operating at peak capacity just for this one dock.

There are plans for another large dock (the Saefthinge Dock). Belgium, and especially Flanders need to get its act together and massively invest in roads. Traffic on roads like E17 and E313 is collapsing almost daily, and are not able to handle thousands of additional trucks on a daily basis. You cannot let the Port of Antwerp grow without adjusting the infrastructure to that growth.

An interesting feature in the Antwerpen area is the partially built canal bypass of Antwerpen. The shipping canal (Albert canal) through Antwerpen is congested with regular ship traffic jams, and a new bypass was proposed and partially built, but then axed by environmentalists. Several remnants can be seen.

Approximate route:

The most prominent remnant of this plan is the branch near Oelegem, which was supposed to cross under the E34 motorway.

A motorway bridge was constructed over what was supposed to be the canal bypass.

Further northwest, a lake is a remnant of what was supposed to be a major shipping canal. The E19 and Rotterdam - Antwerpen high speed rail run across it.

Further west, A12 features no remnants of this canal, most likely because it was built after the canal was cancelled.
