I like language politics on road signage. It gives certain 'controversies' a visibility. And today, everybody drives with GPS.

[rolleyes]
I don't have GPS.
But I know how to read maps, so that's all right.

Ehm, Belgian maps maybe, but most maps would indicate Antwerpen, Liège and maybe both names for Brussels (Brussel & Bruxelles). The same goes for the French city of Lille, which most Belgians use the name of "Rijsel" for, however "Rijsel" is far from daily usage in the Netherlands.

Take a look at Google Maps:

No Luik, Bergen, Doornik, Gand, Nijvel, Waver, Namen, Tongres or Anvers.

Inderdaad/effectivement/indeed.

Somewhere on line, years ago (can't find it now), I saw someone who had (as humor) made up second names for Belgian cities that don't in fact have them. Charleroi, for example, would be "Karelkoning"....

But try tell that the Belgians...
I think you'd be surprised at just how many of us Belgians agree that the policy is ridiculous. Road signs are there to help people find their way, NOT to further some kind of political agenda.

Search Lille on Viamichelin.fr (because I can't figure out how to create a link and don't know how to do a screen cap); you'll see that even Michelin, even on its maps of northern France, labels Lille in both French and Dutch. Don't know of another French city they show a foreign name for. The French IGN does so as well, on some series.

For that matter, Michelin maps of Belgium are chock full of cities (or even very small villages near the linguistic frontier) with two names. They have to be, given the state of the road signage. [DISCLAIMER: I'n not criticizing (or endorsing) the state of the road signage. I'm a neutral observer.]

This is the sign posted on E40 several kilometres from Liege/Luik:

Someone here did not like French name of Germany:

Aachen - yes. Antwerpen - no.

What suprises me about that first set of signs is seeing "Saarbrücken" that far north.

There used to be Trèves I believe. However, A60 in Germany was finished so they had to change the destination.

But the E42 goes to Mainz (Mayence, if you're French. ;-) )

I checked my picas album and discovered that there is slightly different story with French destinations. They are written in 2 languages on contrary to German ones which are just in German.

Famous Parijs(poor quality, sorry):

And Dunkerque:

That just shows how useless the E-numbering in Europe is. Nobody would follow E42 if they were going from Liège to Mainz. There is a large motorway gap between Wittlich and Bingen.

No, Belgian E42 south of Verviers is mainly used by north-south traffic, for example from Liège or Aachen to Trier or Saarbrücken.

All Belgian pictures can be seen in SSC, here or in Polish section. Also, you may have a look into my picasa album where you possibly(there is huge mess there) find them.

Rijssel and the region of Nord-Pas-De-Calais (Nood-Nauw-Van-Kales) is quite and exception in France for most pupils in schools in that region are made familiar with Dutch as language. They can even choose to take it up as a full course in high school.

About the German part of Belgium, it is located within the state of Wallonia so signs over there used to bilingual but in recent years the German speaking Belgians rediscovered there idendity and so new signs in Eupen (thats how the part is called) are in German only.

Old signs have the French part of their text removed (all of this happened once in Flanders as well).

French-Wallonian rest stop signs

Their German-Wallonian family

And this is how we do it in Flanders. (when it comes to rest stops without facilities)

I don't. I hate being told by a machine where to go. I'm not a robot.

Which most Flemings use the name of "Rijsel". The Walloons and the Bruxellois of course use the name of "Lille".

By the way, how do you pronounce "Lille" in The Netherlands? Also, how do people call Dunkirk in The Netherlands?
