There are exceptions, for example some sections of A4 from Namur to Arlon.

Most of them are lit because of overcapacity at nuclear power stations.

I'm annoyed about Belgian signs, they don't show the motorway number, only E numbers

That's because the A-numbers are only administrative, and not used in daily talk and traffic information. The A-number is only important when there isn't a E-number.

And I'm annoyed about all the signs (for places etc.) because they look so... old-fashioned. Dutch and German signs look more modern.

That's not correct. People don't refer to motorway numbers because they aren't signposted.

Actually, they are signposted, but only on milemarkers.

See the richness of Belgium and how well they maintain some of their infrastructure

I never understand that. In theory, Belgium is one of the richest countries in Europe, but if you're driving through it, all you can think is: "My god what a mess". Everything looks neglected.

Flanders is one of the richests countries in Europe. Wallonia isn't. Though Flanders roads are bad too. Maybe its just like in China and the USA: they like to build new things, but they don't like to maintain them.

Yep, some of them have got new pavement. However, I heard the problem was they build some roads in the 70's very cheap, meaning they didn't use a foundation, but layed the concrete onto a sandbed. No wonder you'll get dark holes in the pavement

Actually I had a good impression of Belgian motorways when I was going on them, even better than on German motorways
