Actually, i was there yesterday, and saw that sign, it's the steepest grade-sign i've seen in Germany. Unlike France, where i 2 days ago saw a 23 and 25% warning sign in the town of Le Muy near Cannes. It's impossible to drive that slow.

here are pictures to prove it. the same procedure as every few months: A3 Westerwald => Frankfurt

First sign bridge @Elzer Berg. There is a construction site at the moment, so 100 is currently not allowed, only 80.

2. sign bridge with (radar)

3. sign bridge with radar. The shoulder became the truck line because the left lane is currently used for the opposite direction.

And now there are two possibilities: 1. I have missed the 4th sign bridge, or 2. the 4th sign bridge has disappeared

End of construction near Limburg-Nord.

Approaching Limburg-Süd.

Between Limburg-Süd and Bad Camberg. You can see the high speed railway Köln-Frankfurt (ICE) to the left.

Up and down in the hilly Taunus region.

I don't think speeding was the main factor in those accidents. Speeding may caused a few cars to collide, but not a staggering 259. I think weather factors are leading here, otherwise such accidents would happen everytime, which they don't.

some people said in interviews, that first it was raining very much and strong, then suddenly the sun came out and due to its reflections on the wet asphalt, the drivers couldn't see the stop lights and blinkers etc of the cars in front of them.

A7 Kassel-Arnstein

I've started uploading the pictures now. I've decided not to upload the A44 Unna-Kassel pics, because they are too ugly to be posted (very dirty windshield, bad light), so I'll start off with the A7 Kassel-Arnstein. These pictures are also not very good, again caused by the dirty windshield. Still I hope you like it, but don't feel sorry if you don't.

The A7 between Kassel and Arnstein is quiet and 2×3 for quite a bit, and therefore a good alternative for Dutchies going on holiday. The motorway was full of Danes, Swedish and Norwegian vehicles, which is not surprising. Map of the route: click

1. Short 2×4 near Kassel

2. Lots of trucks

3.

4. Hilly and 2×3

5.

6. Würzburg 185 km

7. Trucks and a windmill

8. Hilly

9. Same hill

10. Another hill

11. Würzburg 172 km

12. Going uphill, trucks are not allowed to drive on the left two lanes over here

13.

14. Down and up

15. Baustelle ahead

16. There we are

17. Here we reached 146 km/h by just letting the car roll down the hill

18. Small section where the A5 and A7 are combined. This is also where the A5 starts and where the eastern part of the A4 begins

19. 2×4

20. Special lane for trucks

21. We're on the quiet A7 again

22. 2×3 again

23. Danish guy in front of us

24. Some trucks on the other side

25. Baustelle

26. 2×2 again

27. Near Fulda

28. Parkplatz; Würzburg still 105 km

29. Autobahndreieck Fulda ahead

30. The weather was quite good for driving; not hot at all (23 Celsius), cloudy, but dry

31. 2×3 uphill, south of Fulda

32. 2×2 again, downhill

33. Talbrücke

34. Just entered Bayern - new asphalt and a concrete shoulder

35.

36. Ausfahrt

37. You see those billboards everywhere in Germany and Austria, to scare off drivers from speeding

38.

39. 2×3 again

40. Last picture. Near Arnstein we took the A70 to Bamberg, to avoid the A3 between Würzburg and Nürnberg. This turned out to be a good choice, on the radio we heard that it was "stauig" on that section, while the A70 and A73 were quiet

That's it!

So you liked A7

It's a very nice route, not as busy as A3 (especially the Aschaffenburg - Würzburg - Nürnberg part), and very scenic all the way to Schweinfurt. South of that, it becomes boring because you enter the flat highlands of southern Germany, basically a large plateau that continues all the way to the Allgäu.

I drove the A3 on the way back. It was horrible. No jams, but very busy and we didn't drive any faster then 90 km/h. And that was last wednesday

Nice pics, the A7 looks quite scenic with all these hills, and not so busy.

I don't quite get this one though. How can car- and truck lanes for the same direction be separated by lanes for another direction? How does it look like in continuation?

I don't really know. Google Maps shows this, so it's not clear. The right lane doesn't seem to be there.

This way, trucks don't have to move three lanes to the left.

Yeah, but how do they return to A7 when they go to A5? I guess Google Maps is outdated, I only see 4 lanes instead of 5.

The Google Earth image is about 9 years old. This has been around for a couple of years now, I have it on pics from 2005, where there was still the old situation. I made pics from Dortmund to Regensburg back then, but the weather didn't cooperate.

Ah, now I know. It's quite logical actually, because the A7 turns back left, while the truck lane just continues straight forward (or right) and rejoins the A5 car lanes.

A3 Nürnberg

A flyby of Nürnberg. It's 22 kilometers of A3 to get from A9 to A73. These pics were taking during morning rushhour (8 am), I guess there's no structural congestion at this part!

Well, I am sure there are steeper sections on A8 - both east and west of Stuttgart... like 12%.
