A70 Arnstein-Bamberg

In order to avoid the busy A3 between Würzburg and Nürnberg, I took the A70 and A73 instead of the A7 and A3. It's a quiet and good motorway. Unfortunately the pictures have the same problem as with the pictures of the A7: dark and a dirty windshield

1. We've just entered the motorway

2. Approaching Dreieck Werntal

3. There it is

4. Exit Schweinfurt, just too late

5. Good motorway

6. Good they sign Nürnberg here. We leave the A70 at Bamberg

7. Nice landscape, the motorway is a little bit busier over here

8. Entering the motorway after lunch

9. Some more trucks

10. Small hill

11.

12. Probably not as busy as on the A3

13. Getting darker. Not long after this we had a bit of rain

14. Kreuz Bamberg ahead. There we took the A73

That's it!

I took pics in the other direction 1.5 months ago

That tunnel wasn't finished until a few years though (with the yellow portals), nor was the bridge that followed across the Main.

The A70 looks quite nice and hilly too (with a cleaner windshield it would look even nicer :P).

A73 Nürnberg - Bamberg

This set follows A73 north, right through the city of Erlangen (pop. 105,000) and north to Bamberg. The A73-A70 is a good alternative for A3 when you're coming or heading from/to A7/Kassel.

Some thick forests there. So you two went in opposite directions. Good you didn't crash (Geisterfahrer).

Nice pics, Chris! He made these pics a long time ago, btw. I guess that I won't upload my A73 pics, it doesn't add anything to this report. Next is probably A8, I'm not sure.

12% definitely not....that's too much . i was in Austria with my Lupo yesterday and we drove over the "nockalm-street" with height differences of over 1000m! there we had not more than 12%. and i can tell you...12% is very much . thank god my lupo has 100hp, was an easy trip for my car .

Not with a dirty windshield like on the A70 pics. Furthermore, there are only 12 or so

At least most sections of Aschaffenburg - Würzburg are under construction (or short before) right now. This Autobahn desperately needs 3-4 lanes per direction all the way from the Ruhr area to Nürnberg.

Will the upgraded motorway also have hard shoulders or will they just transform them to the new driving lane (like they did it on A6)?

I meant "busy" relative to it's capacity 100,000 AADT on 2x3 seems less busy than 80,000 on 2x2.

You should always listen to the radio in Germany... so you can take an alternative route as early as possible, for instance links/rechtsrheinisch (A3 or A61) or A5 or A81 in southern Germany.

Most people just follow their tomtom though.. If you email Dutch motorist organization ANWB to ask which route is best they just simply reply: "use the shortest route that your GPS says".

The German radio was ok, but the radio service in Bayern wasn't good IMO. On our way back we were listening to the news, expecting that traffic information would follow afterwards (it was quite busy on the A8 and we wanted to know about jams on the A99 and A9). After the news there was nothing, just some talkshow. Furthermore, on the first day of travel we were in a short jam on the A8. It was five o'clock, so we decided to listen to the radio and find out how long this jam was. All they said was that it was "stauig" between München and Rosenheim. This jam turned out to be 5 km, so it was worth mentioning IMO, since they also mentioned shorter jams

Which radio station do you listen to in Bayern (Bavaria)?

I usually turn on Antenne Bayern, since they also have some decent music. You can get that station already around Kassel.
