Yep, Niedersachsen is Lower Saxony, sorry about that, I prefer the actual names over translations. In Dutch it's called Nedersaksen.

Renumbering is not something that happens frequently, but it does happen from time to time. I remember maps where A40 through the Ruhr area used to be A430 and it was A2 west of Duisburg (current A40). Some old numbers have been revived, like A535 between Velbert and Wuppertal.

There was a significant renumbering in 1975, when most Autobahnen got their current number.

I am planning to do some driving in and around Munich in the beginning of October during the Oktoberfest. Does it really get bad in terms of traffic? I would probably try to get to the city as early in the morning as possible and then avoid driving for the rest of the day. Or should I expect bad traffic on the A99 and inner ring even in early mornings (like 7a.m.)? I'm planning to try my luck finding a free parking spot within the Mittlerer ring. Or is it something I better not even try to do at that time of year?

I think you're going to have a hard time for all of the above.

I think the parking is free in the centre. I had to pick my sister up from the Hbf once during the Fest, I managed to park pretty close to the station without having to pay anything

It depends. Close to Marienplatz and Karlsplatz I know for sure you must pay for parking.

A8 AS61-AD Leonberg

Last month I've taken some pics of the A8 in Germany, starting at exit 61, about 20 km west of Ulm until AD Leonberg (A8/A81). A small map:

As you can see on the map, the eastbound and westbound motorway run separately from each other at some point. I've tried to make a bit more pics here, as it's quite a special piece of motorway Traffic was not too busy, just some jams near Stuttgart.

All pics (73 of them), can be found on Flickr: click!

Thanks for watching!

It appears some sections might need an update:

An upgrade has been planned for years, but the last thing I heard about it were some conflicts about the finance model.

Thanks timon, nice pictures. The motorway does not look so different from Italian infamous A3 (no shoulder, killer curves and steep descents)... I will be probably driving there in a couple of days... :O

That section of A8 was built in the 30's and is even today in original state. I think it was OK 80 years ago :-) (Section Salzburg - Rosenheim is very similar).
I think that picture was shot near Göppingen where the carriegeways are divided so that there's a mountain between them (you can check it even in Google Maps) and there's a very hard slope in the way (high point from Ulm, low point from Stuttgart), 5-7% for several kilometers. Strict speed limit (80 for cars, even less for trucks) for safety reasons.

However, I like that section! :-)

AIFAIK that section should be expanded to six lane starting in 2012... or so says German Wikipedia

Zwabische Alb that section is called. Notorious for accidents.

Speaking of widening and construction.... I have to pass Hannover on the A2 next week (going from Magdeburg to Bremen). I know there's construciton going on at AK Hannover-Ost, but I can't really figure out how bad the sitaution is there?

Has anyone driven through there lately? Traffic jams all day long or mostly in rush hour?

A81 AD Leonberg-AK Weinsberg

After the A8 the journey continued of the A81. Just for a short while, at Heilbronn we left the A81 again. This stretch is completely 2×3. In combination with the slightly hilly area and the not so busy traffic this makes it a pleasant ride. A map:

Nice photos. A81 is a great ride, not as busy as A8 and some nice scenery. I've driven the entire A81 from north to south, but never in the NB direction. This particular section is the oldest of A81, it opened in 1938 and 1940.

What I don't understand is that at the A81/A6 interchange at Heilbronn, they signpost Ulm via A81, A6 which is a lot longer in distance then via A81, A8 Stuttgart.
