That would be Hendelstein to Ampfing. I think the ecologists' argument is retromingent. More damage would be done to the environment by many vehicles driving the longer route on the A8.

It's not panicking actually. All it takes to break down traffic in a street is one muppet to slid on its summer tyres.

True, but I doubt that one muppet is able to gridlock the whole of Cologne...
Admit it, the Prussians don't know how to drive on snow. There's no shame in it.

The Bayern government has made € 395 million available to build the missing link of the "Frankenschnellweg" (A73) in Nürnberg. The missing link is only about 1 kilometer and only has three traffic lights. Space is already available in most of the median, however a number of railway overpasses are in the way:

This part of A73 will be probably put in a tunnel under railway overpasses, I think.

According to the German Wikipedia the next stretch ("Bauabschnitt 16" on the included map) should begin construction in the first half of 2013 since all legal ways to oppose it have been used up and were struck down.

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bundesa...erf.C3.BChrung

If and when they'll start with Bauabschitt 17 is up to the ever changing German capital politicians. Needless to say that building such inner city motorways is a political bloodbath...

Nice pics!

A cousin of mine that now lives in Germany told me that the German authorities want to change the no speed limit law on German Autobahns to a 130 km/h general speed limit because of high number of accidents. Is this true?

*I know that there are many autobahns that have a posted speed limit; I'm not talking about those ones, but about a general speed limit like in all other EU countries

I have not read anything about a new push for general speed limits on autobahns recently. There are always - and have always been - some voices for a general speed limit but that topic has been quiet for a while.

Most demands for a speed limit usually come from the Green Party but their reasoning is increased fuel efficiency and environmental issues, not so much safety.

I am not aware of an increased rate of accidents on German Autobahns that could be tied to missing speed limits.

Yes and no. A general speed limit is on the agenda of several of the political parties (SPD and Grüne) running for office. So far none of these have been elected so wether they would actually make a change or not nobody knows. There will be general elections again in Autumn 2013 so the government might change then. Personally I don't expect it but in politics everything is possible. The current conservative German government has explicitly spoken against a general speed limit on many occasions so I doubt they'd change anything upon re-election. SPD and the Green party were the government from 1998 to 2005 and they didn't introduce a speed limit then either (despite claiming they would before election) so who really knows.

It is under construction but unfortunately the lack of funding required the project to be cut up in pieces and tendered separately at separate times. This results in some sections being nearly completed while others haven't began yet. I believe there were also some land acquisition problems with A30.

By the way A620 is an interesting Stadtautobahn, but it floods sometimes if the Saar River overflows.
